Neighbours slammed for being 'too white'

"Hit Australian TV soap Neighbours has been branded "too white" by black and Asian viewers in Britain.

A report by the nation's racial equality chief found many ethnic viewers felt were under-represented in some of Britain's most popular shows.

Neighbours, which is screened on the Five network, and the BBC comedy The Vicar of Dibley starring Dawn French were singled out for being "all white".

Other popular soaps including the BBC's Eastenders and ITV's Coronation Street also came under attack for including stereotypical characters such as Asian shopkeepers and black single mums.

However reality TV shows including the X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing were commended because people who appeared on those shows were defined by their talent not their ethnicity.

Equality and Human Rights Commission chairman Trevor Phillips said many of Britain's major broadcasters remained "hideously white" when choosing programs.

"I don't think anybody here is saying British TV is racist," Phillips said.

"There are minority faces on TV, but it's that we're not quite getting it right, because we do not really have any minority decision makers.

"White people who live next door to Asian neighbours will see a representation of an ethnic minority family and they will say,`I don't think so, it doesn't ring true with the people I know'."

The report was commissioned by Channel 4 following last year's race row involving reality show Celebrity Big Brother.

During the program, screened early in 2007, Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty found herself under attack from two fellow female contestants.

A senior non-executive BBC director, Dr Samir Shah, also recently accused the public broadcaster of rampant tokenism in its programs."

People complained about Friends having no minority characters. I would have side with the people complaining because New York is one of the most diverse cities in the world.

This is as stupid as if I went to live in China and started whining about there being too many Chinese faces.

'Friends' is about a group of people sharing their lives - why should there be a minority character? In real life, would the group of friends include black or Hispanic characters? Most ethnicities tend to hang out with their own people.

I don't hear white Americans screaming to be represented on minority-centred programs or complaining about minority characters being cast so often as heads of police and forensic departments etc.

The laughable part is that seem to be in process of convincing themselves that they built Australia, that we would collapse in confusion if it weren't for all those super-intelligent Asians and Indians..

It's a good mental balancing act, to convince yourself of your superiority to Australians after you fled your own society to emigrate to Australia. Oh, and we should be grateful they were willing to leave their own enviable cultures to come here and build Australia for us.

The Aboriginal, The Dutch, The English, The Irish, The Scottish, The French, The Italians, The Chinese, The Germans, The rest of Europe, The Vietnamese, The Middle Eastern countries, The South American Countries, I mean where on earth do we actually start and finish?

Whether we like it or not, we really are multi cultural and I for one do not feel the least threatened by that fact.

Imagine if all we had was the boring old English influence of the 1950's 1960's, what a sad, empty place this would be.

Give me the passions, the foods, and the rich cultures we have today please, and welcome one and all.

Really? Then try this: enter into one of their cultural arenas and demand equal billing and see what happens. This is how you can verify how one-sided this is. These immigrants came to your country knowing that they were coming to Australia, obviously. It's outrageous and presumptious for them demand that Australia be portrayed more like the country they came from. If thats their hearts' desire, tell them to go back. It's a "no-brainer": Australia looks like AUSTRALIA!!! Don't let them bully you like this. When it gets momentum behind it it's a bone to be chewed!

I agree with most of what you say, I wouldn't turn back the clock to the days of monoculture.

But I think Australia has had enough multiculturalism for a while. We have environmental and water issues that need to be solved before we think about importing more people.

Female circumcision, polygamy, Islamic law, chador-ed females, etc. those customs and values are alien to Australian society. Lest you accuse me of picking on Muslims - its hard not to single them out, since they are the only ones practising these customs.

Taken too far, multiculturalism leads to a country consisting of ethnic or religious groups with nothing in common.

If language differences can create such bad feelings between people who are so closely related, what does that say about the prospects of mixing different languages AND races/cultures together? It’s a recipe for disaster.
