All tsunamis that have hit Hawaii in the past 100 years have come from earthquakes triggered in Alaska. I grew up in Kailua on the windward side. When we heard that warning siren my Father would pack up the Family and head for higher ground. This happened more during the 50"s and 60's and you could say we have dodged the bullet so far. When ever I hear a earthquake has happened I immediately contact all family members putting them on alert. I sorry to say its just a matter of time before it happens here. This article makes me nervous with highlights on chain reaction type earthquakes, and the sizes(9.0 to 9.7) which is huge. Alaska and California seems to worry me the most with those Pacific plates beginning to slip and slide. With the state cutting back services I hope we keep Civil Defense operational and ready for action.

To illustrate the Worst Case Scenario for Hawaiians the Tsunami Warning Center should provide a map showing the areas on Oahu that would be impacted by a Magnitude 9 earthquake.

The fault zone that has me most concerned is the one lying off the coast of California. Should a "giant" earthquake ever happen along this fault, it would probably impact the Saint Andreas fault perhaps pushing a good part of California into the ocean. Could one possibly imagine the tsunami generated by a good portion of California sliding into the Pacific Ocean?

It's the SAN Andreas fault not the Santa Andreas...yeeeesh.

California will probably not fall into the water...the San Andreas fault runs north/south...a huge qauke would more than likely change the approximity of San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Now that you so rudely attacked the first poster about the name of the fault (and you even read that wrong), try reading your OWN post and see how many errors you can find.

Now that we've seen the deadly results of such earthquakes and tsunami, I don't know how much more convincing the frigging politicians in Am. Samoa needed???!!! The actions of the greedy bastards and crooked few has resulted in millions of tsunami warning $$$$s been frozen by Uncle Sam.

As of now, Am. Samoa has no warning system in place. I hope the politicians would get off their fat arses, stop the frigging nonsense and do something about getting the funds released for tsunami warning systems. How many more lives will it take?

In the meantime, I will gladly heed the advice of Mr. Gerard Fryer in the article: "We have to make sure our emergency procedures are honed, our personal 'go' bags are ready and that we all know what to do when the inevitable happens."

Hi Alice, are you reading about the end of the world by earthquake? I think that I saw it on Movie25.com last week, otherwise all goes well (despite the awaited Megaquake)

This stuff has to be caused by humans. They are taking too many fossil fuels out of the ground somewhere. They need regulated & taxed to afford the warning systems & after care from their careless actions....

Where have you been? The last major Earthquake that created the deadly tsunami's that hit Hawaii was in 1960 and it came from CHILE.

I thought you get gas from chile?

There's a very large crack along the south coast of Kona. It's suspected that a huge chunk of the Big Island is slowly slipping. Should that section of the island suddenly slide into the ocean, there will be an immense tsunami that would hit the rest of the island chain within a matter of minutes (about 20 minutes for Oahu). It would scrub away much of what we consider to be civilization up to an elevation of a few hundred feet.

Of course no one has any idea of when it could happen. Maybe next week. Maybe in a few millenia.

It's happened before, and these slides, or slumps, have created significant geologic features including Kealakekua Bay and the Nuuanu Pali cliffs.

I'm very impressed with your knowledge of these 'large cracks','slippery plates' and 'slides/slumps'...!!! hahaha lol

Brah, sounds like you only catch the kine two-legged fishes eh?!... Maybe I should come by and check-out your fishing hole!!! LOL

Seriously, I hope we'll be long gone before nature decides to create more beautiful "look-outs".

Daily Horoscope for December 9

Leo

You're really on the ball today so there's no danger of anyone tricking you or fobbing you off with lame excuses. If you suspect that a loved one is hiding something from you, you'll want to question them in a lot of detail. That's all very well but try not to turn it into the third degree, nor to make them feel hounded or bullied by your desire to know what's going on.
