of coure they are settlers of Vlasi nationality The Vlachs, who call themselves Aromani or Arman, first appear in the historical record during the Middle Ages, primarily in the region south of the Balkans. They traditionally claim to be descendants of the Romans who in the 2nd century bce occupied ancient Macedonia and what is now northern and northeastern Greece and who by the 2nd century ce occupied Dacia, a Roman province located in Transylvania and the Carpathian Mountains of present-day Romania. After the Romans evacuated Dacia (271 ce), the area was subjected to a series of barbarian invasions. According to some scholars, the Romanized Dacians remained in the area, probably taking refuge in the Carpathian Mountains. They remained there for several centuries as shepherds and farmers, until conditions settled and they returned to the plains.

"It is naive to pretend that the Greeks are coming to it self territory in Epirus, which belongs to the South of Albania today. Meanwhile, no statistics for autoctonesi of Greeks and Greek communities such are vllaho hellenes involving South Western territories of Albania that are today as Narta, Selenica, while allegedly Himara province is inhabited by Albanians."
If someone has a historic claim on a land there must be some sign that they have lived there. There were Greeks in Albania but no record of Albanians other than of Illyrians, if they are the same people and that through Greek sources. Don't you think there is a problem Dardan? At least if it could be proven that there is a connection between Albanian and Illyrians it would be something but I expect most histoirans even then would agree that the Illyrians became absorbed to the Greek, and Roman world other than maybe for some isolated mountainous tribes - possibly. For the simple reason that the only written languages until Cyril and Methodius were Latin and Greek, those who do not have Greek or Latin as the base of their language or at least some words of Latin or Greek need to prove their ancestry otherwise. In any case being Illyrian does not make anybody a better person or with more rights or better claims to anything other than Illyrian culture, history and literature. But to claim the Greeks vanished or do not exist in the face of the language surviving in Epirus and Macedonia, what is your problem? Are these encyclopedias or communist propaganda campaigns? |

America and the great war for humanity and freedom
By Willis Fletcher Johnson Page 46 THE ALBANIANS Now let us glance for a moment at some of the present dwellers in this historic land. In the extreme west, in the mountainous region along the Adriatic Coast, are the Albanians, or Arnauts, who have the distinction of being one of the only two or three peoples in Europe who so far as we know have never migrated but have been settled where they are today ever since the dawn of history. More than one thousand years before our era there occurred the Dorian invasion, and it was several centuries later before Greece attained the glory which made her unique among the nations of antiquity and still leaves her in memory the unrivaled wonder of the world. But long before the Dorian invasion this whole region was occupied by what the Greeks called the Pelasgian race. The origin or the meaning of that word Pelasgian is unknown. But that was what Homer and other ancient Greeks called the people who were there before them. They have all vanished save the Albanians, who today remain the unchanging representatives of the prehistoric Pelasgians. Centuries ago, when the Turks were striving for the conquest of all Europe, the Albanians produced in John Castriot, Prince of Croia, best known as Scanderbeg, one of the supreme, immortal heroes of the world; the man who held his rock citadel for a lifetime against all the might of Othman, and who with a handful of mountaineers rolled back in disaster and dismay the Turkish armies which were threatening all Europe, and sent the proudest and mightiest of the Ottoman Sultans back to Adrianople to die of chagrin and despair and a broken heart. To this day the Albanians are still the same wild, daring, hospitable, indomitable mountaineers that they were of old, and though for centuries they have been nominally under Turkish rule, they have never fully acknowledged any other authority than their own. http://books.google.com/books... |

1 Page 483 The Albanians are apparently the most ancient race in southeastern Europe. History and legend afford no record of their arrival in the Balkan Peninsula. They are probably the descendants of the earliest Aryan, immigrants, who were represented in historical times by the kindred Ilryrians, Macedonians and Epirots; the Macedonians and Epirots are believed by Hahn to have formed the core of the pro-Hellenic Tyrrheno-Pelasgian population which inhabited the southern portion of the peninsula and extended its limits to Thrace and Italy. The Illyrians were also " Pelasgian," but in a wider sense. Of these cognate races, which are described by the Greek writers as barbarous or non-Hellenic, the Illyrians and Epirots, he thinks, were respectively the progenitors of the CÍegt, or northern, and the Tasks, or southern, Albanians. The Via Egnatia, which Strain)(vii. fragment 3) describes as forming the boundary between the Illyrians and Epirots, practically corresponds with the course of the Shkumb, which now separates the Ghegs and the Tosks. The same geographer (v. 2.221) states that the Epirots were also called Pelasgians; the Pelasgian Zeus was worshipped at Dodona (Homer, II. xvi. 234), and the neighbourhood of the sanctuary was called Pelasgia (Herodotus ii. 56). The meaning of the term " Pelasgian " is, however, too obscure to furnish, a basis for ethnographical speculation; in the time of Herodotus it may have already come to denote a period rather than a race. The name Tost is possibly identical with '1'im.tts, Elruscus, while the form Tyrrkenus perhaps survives in Tirana http://books.google.com/books... |

1 When you occupy this land called Greece you found there another civilization. Not only this, but Albanians or Arvanitas are the people they create the Greek State. Heroes of Greek revolution was Albanians or Arvanitas The Albanian costume has become the national dress of Greece Greek national dance is the chams dance. Tsamikos The leaders of Greek parliament was Albanian or arvanitas "Parliamentary Debates Nafplios, before the arrival of the king of Otto in 1832, and ten years later, held in Albanian language, while the agenda was written in Greek. On the other hand, the king Otto since his arrival in Greece Greek studied during more than four years, which can directly address the people. When he found that his people did not speak Greek but Albanian, he was angered and cut Greek language lessons. " Enigma Robert d’ Angely When King Otto of Greece came in Greece, he hardly heard anyone speak in Greek and so he asked: "Where are the Greeks in Athens?" His court looked at each other and answered: "There are no Greeks, but do not be troubled because this Albanian population will always be faithful to your monarchy". 1 Greek language has been only school language; very few people did speak Greek, only those who had been in school. Those who lead the Greek parliament did not know Greek, this testify of arvanitasit, Colonel did not know to speak Greek, Kolokotroni, Karasikaqi of others. See and video here. http://video.google.com/videoplay... If people in Greece will not speak Albanian, how they will understand the state leading, with sign language!!! Albanian population there was reduced with the arrival of immigrants from Asia There was a story about a document found during World War II that in 1827 the Greek parliament took a vote to change the national language of Greece to Albanian and it lost by 3 votes http://www.articlesbase.com/religion-articles... |

Find us this document and we can discuss it. In the meantime, here is a quote from Nicholas Hammond’s History of Albania: “In the fifth and sixth centuries A.D.'lllyricum', the Roman province of the northwest Balkans which began in the south with Scodra, was a very important part of the Empire, because it provided good soldiers and leading emperors such as Diocletian and Justinian. The line of division between Illyricum and the Greek area; 'Epirus Nova', in terms of Roman provincial administration ran somewhere between Scodra and Dyrrachium and then eastwards on the north side of the Shkumbi and Lake Ochrid. One reason for this line was that it placed the main road from the west to the east, the Via Egnatia, under the control of one province. Another reason was that it corresponded more or less with the line of demarcation between the Illyrian language and the Greek language. Within the Greek area there were two provinces in the northwest,'Epirus Nova', which ran from south of Scodra to the northern tip of the Gulf of Valona and included the sea-terminals of the Via Egnatia, Dyrrachium and Aulon, and 'Epirus Vetus', which ran from Cape Glossa or Linguetta, the northern promontory of the Acroceraunian range, to the Gulf of Arta and sometimes to the Gulf of Corinth. There is no doubt that the population of Epirus Nova was then partly of Illyrian and partly of Greek blood, the former probably predominating, but it was culturally Greek and probably considered itself to be Greek or Graeco-Roman. On the other hand the population of lllyricum was Illyrian and thought of itself as Illyrian or Illyro-Roman, using Latin as its adopted language for literary purposes.” |

1 "History of Albania" Native pelasgians, which passes as the language of the first arrived in Italy and in Greece, Albanians, which follow naturally as the only language to save today? Dear z.Dozon, former consul of France in Ioannina, whose testimony has a significant weight, and which, for the collection of songs, his grammar and vocabulary, certainly has great merit for Albania, stated that: - "Report phonetic language Albanian has a wealth and variety of language that exceeds the Aristofanit enough." How could Greek pulpit not be culpable, when prevented and still prevents the day, the disbursement of this language so beautiful! Greek literature boasts that it has started their Homer. Yes Homer people, from the Greek school, which has emerged? Which is formed by the school? Before the Greek schools, therefore, had Pelasgian school, and a literature major and perfect, which has been the foundation of Greek literature. Is generally accepted that Albanians belong race pelasgian- historian says (vol. 1, pp. 544). Pelasgians were too old for Greeks, the ancients, who made a fabulous race, as Titanet and Ciklopet. But their history but we followed them from invaders, while they themselves were too uncivilized to leave us very accurate reports. Also appearing in the classical traditions, as a background of dark that loses SURVEY. It is not so strange that Greek authors describe them as barbaric. Zhan Klod Faveirial 1884 – 1889 |

1 By Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons Legislation – 1879 Page 2002 It is notorious that the Albanian nation is more ancient than the Greek. It is well known that in ancient times Epirus formed an integral part of Albania, and that that country has never been occupied by Greeks in any degree whatever. The testimony of the most celebrated historians of antiquity—Herodotus, Thucydides, and Strabo—fully confirms this historic truth, and in this respect the works of the greatest modern geographers fully corroborate ancient authors. One of the absurd pretensions advanced by the Greeks is, that since the inhabitants of Janina and Narda use the Greek language, they ought to be considered as being of Greek nationality. Now the population of Epirus amounts to about 650,000 souls, and the fraction of the inhabitants stated to speak Greek scarcely attains the relatively insignificant number of 74,000; and besides this peculiarity i» explained, not by their Greek origin, but by the fact that up to a certain epoch there was no Albanian alphabet, and particularly by the inevitable effect of neighbourhood, and the daily relations of commerce. Practically, everyone knows that whatever language they may speak, the inhabitants of these districts are Albanian by origin, and, besides, if the principle of conformity of language were to be taken as a rule, it would be necessary to change the map, not only of Europe and Asia, but of every part of the globe. http://books.google.com/books... |

1 The author confuses Greek with Eastern Orthodox in religion, this is a common error, otherwise it is correct in pointing out that Catholic Albanians lived in the north and Orthodox Albanians lived in the south all the way down to Arta. |
