‘Bradford is very inbred’: Muslim outrage as professor warns first-cousin marriages increase risk of birth defects

Inbreeding among ‘British’ Muslims is threatening the health of their children, a leading geneticist warned yesterday.

Professor Steve Jones, from University College London, said the common practice in Islamic communities for cousins to marry each other increased the risk of birth defects.

‘There may be some evidence that cousins marrying one another can be harmful,’ he told an audience at the Hay Festival.

‘We should be concerned about that as there can be a lot of hidden genetic damage. Children are much more likely to get two copies of a damaged gene.

‘Bradford is very inbred. There is a huge amount of cousins marrying each other there.’

Studies have shown that 55 per cent of British Pakistanis are married to first cousins – and in Bradford, this rises to 75 per cent.

Other research has found that children of first cousins are ten times more likely to have recessive genetic disorders and face deafness, blindness and infant mortality.

But Prof Jones’s comments provoked anger among some Muslim groups (Shock Horror) yesterday.

Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the Ramadhan Foundation, which promotes the image of Muslims in Britain, said:‘I know many Muslims who have married their cousins and none of them have had a problem with their children.

‘Obviously, we don’t want any children to be born disabled who don’t need to be born disabled, so I would advise genetic screening before first cousins marry (So long as the taxpayers pay for it).

‘But I find Steve Jones’s comments unworthy of a professor. Using language like “inbreeding” to describe cousins marrying is completely inappropriate and further demonises Muslims.’

Concern about the risks to children from first-cousin marriage has been described as the last great taboo.

Former environment minister Phil Woolas was rebuked by Downing Street in 2008 for saying British Pakistanis are fuelling rates of birth defects by marrying their cousins, with the spokesman for then prime minister Gordon Brown saying the issue was not one for ministers to comment on.

Mohammed Saleem Khan, chief executive of the Bradford Council for Mosques, said:‘It is important to discuss these issues, but I just do not know of any firm evidence backing up Professor Jones’s claims. I think we need more conclusive studies so we can know for certain if there is any genuine risk.

‘Marriages between cousins is certainly common within south Asia, but it is becoming less so in Britain and also in Bradford. Islam allows you to marry anyone you want, so in many ways Islam promotes diversity.’(LMFAO)

In his talk, Prof Jones said inbreeding was not confined to Muslims, and historically had occurred in every part of society, including the royal family.

He said:‘We are all more incestuous than we realise. In Northern Ireland lots of people share the same surname, which suggests a high level of inbreeding.

‘There’s a lot of surname diversity in London but if you look at the Outer Hebrides there are rather fewer surnames in relation to the number of people.’

Prety telling figures, is it possible for a woman to initiate divorce under islamic law. I wonder how many if any divorces were initiated by women since it is so easy for a man to do it. In Malaysia under sharia law it is now accepted that a wife can be divorced by her husband by text message alone.

In the end we see that the popular Muslim view that Christians and Jews have corrupted their Scriptures fails. It fails to find support among the Quran, the Hadith, or wide support among Muslim scholars.
Your claim that the bible has been corrupted is based on the fact that if you believe what the bible says then your scriputures must be wrong (which they are) and islam falls down in a heap. Mohammad believed in it in his day. The bible that was written before him and after his is the same. There are over 6000 manuscripts to support this.

So here are you with your “new pearls of Wisdom”, let us analyze more salient of them:

A. Bible being same as it was in 7th century:

How idiotic is your statement you can yourself see.

When we see “before our own eyes” different versions of Bible, how can we say that Bible today is same as it was in 7th Century?

1. We have RC Bible with 73 Books and Protestant Bible with 66 Books, was that the same in 7th century?

2. We have KJV and then we have RSV, many verses from KJV are removed from RSV, was that the same situation in 7th century?

3. Then we have NIV, NKJV, Jehovah’s Witness version and innumerable versions of Bible…

This is what we see before out own eyes, how can we simply believe your statement that Bible is same as it was in 7th century?

And what about changes that happened before 7th Century? They “automatically” become word of God?

04. It is strange that you take recourse to Quran to prove that Bible is Authentic!! According to you Quran is not a Book of God, so how come you are quoting from Quran.

05. Quran never speaks about Bible as a whole (I mean collection of 66 or 73 books) it speaks about Torah and INJEEL and ZABUR and revelations sent to prophet of God.

06. Quran also accuses Jews and Christians of changing words from their locations and writing books with their own hands and claiming that they came from God.

07. Quran only confirms that revelation which was given to Moses and Jesus and David and other prophets were from God, that is all.

C. It is ONLY Muslims that claim Bible is corrupted:

09. The reality is that this started between jews and Christians themselves. Jews accuse Christians of corrupting the Bible and Christians accuse the Jews.

10. Otherwise how is it possible that Christians see “Only” Jesus mentioned in OT books and Jews do not see him mentioned not even once.

11. Then all these different sects and denominations of Christians they all accuse each other of corrupting their Bibles, they each have and had their own Bibles.

12. It were Christian Scholars who took up the work of comparing different manuscripts and checking how much they differ from each other. They came to conclusion that “No two copies of most ancient Bibles are exact copies of each other”!!

D. It was not possible to corrupt the Scriptures:

13. When we see with our own eyes, so many different versions of Bible and each differing from each other and we see that in our “Most modern and advance age” the work of “correcting mistakes in Bible” is still going on, how can we accept your statement?

14. It was always very easy to change verses of Bible as it is still possible to change them and do not include any verse in “your version” of Bible!!
