SYDNEY — A year-long study of religious freedom in Australia has revealed widespread distrust of Muslims and discrimination against pagans and homosexuals.

The report released Monday by the Australian Human Rights Commission found that acceptance of religious difference had not become easier as the population became more diverse.

After taking more than 2,000 public submissions and consulting with more than 200 religious, secular and community groups, the report found there was a "pressing need" for education about religions to reduce ignorance and fear.

"There is a current of anti-Muslim discourse that suggests an entrenched hostility often related to overseas events," the report said in its conclusion.

"Significant distrust of Muslims and Islam was expressed by some," it added, saying there were reports of discrimination against Muslims and other religious minorities.

The report entitled 'Freedom of religion and belief in 21st century Australia' found a greater recognition of spiritual communities in Australia, such as pagan and indigenous beliefs, was needed.

It noted that people keeping nature-based spiritual pagan traditions reported high levels of prejudice, discrimination and a lack of recognition of their beliefs.

"The research process also uncovered some prejudice and hostility toward gay people, and also significant concern was expressed regarding employing gay people, particularly in faith-based schools," it said.

The report noted that the religious character of Australia was a contentious issue, with some suggesting Australia was a Christian nation, others arguing it was a secular country and others suggesting it was a multifaith state.

According to the latest national census of 2006, Christians make up 63.9 percent of the Australian population, followed by Buddhists (2.1 percent), Muslims (1.7 percent), Hindus (0.7 percent) and Jews (0.4 percent). Some 18.7 percent said they had no religion and 11.2 percent did not state a faith.

A recent opinion poll indicates the widespread religious intolerance against the Muslim community in the Netherlands as Islamophobia intensified across Europe.


The survey conducted by Maurice De Hond pollster found more than half of the Muslim immigrants in the country complaining about religious discrimination.

Fifty-eight percent of the respondents believed that the behavior of the Dutch government and people to Muslims is discriminatory in comparison with immigrants of other religions.

Two percent of the participants said they did not know whether such discrimination exists while 40 percent said of fair behavior to the Muslim immigrants.

The poll questioned 700 Muslim adults face-to-face and by the telephone on 22-25 April 2012 and was published on May 4.

The Muslims community in the Netherlands comprises mostly of workers from Morocco and Turkey who have moved to the European nation through legal channels.

The foreigners are normally granted Dutch citizenship after a five-year-long stay in the country, and enjoy the right to take part in local elections.

Muslim immigrants, however, seldom take an active role in the votes due to the discriminatory behavior from the Dutch public and government.

No matter where I live and 51% of the people who were living in that country that I I choose to live in, did not like me, I be packing my suitcase and leave, and seek an other country where the people like me.

One has to wonder Why don't the Muslims leave Australia.

Now I ask, the people who live in the country where I choose to live do not like me, however the social security is more than the income I can own in my own country, and in almost all cases the social security income is more than the wages I can earn in my adopted country and I get a better house in my adopted country than the ghetto house I used to live in.
In my adopted country I have 3 bedroom with windows I have an inside kitchen, I have an inside bathroom and I have an inside toilet that I do not have to share with the whole neighbourhood.
The best part is the toilet in my adopted country, after I flush my doo doo away there is nice clean water left for me to do my wudu.
