Many moons ago, while in Dubrovnik, Croatia ... on a Sunday, out of boredome and curiosity ... at sunrise, we drove south a Renault with Italian license plates (which in itself turned to be a problem) and crossed the border ... into Montenegro..

At the Croatian side of the border, after surrending our Israeli passports, they asked us what was the purpose of our trip.

Innocently we said we are going to go up hill for the day, eat some fish by the Adriatic and come back to our hotel in Dubrovnik, before sunset...

"What you are doing is wrong" - we were told- "Montenegro is filthy. The luggage will be stolen from your car (we didn't have any. There is nothing of interest in Montenegro. They don't like Jews there... and if you eat or drink there, you are going to get sick"

I remember a salient feature of our visit.
The trash cans .. in downtown.
Trash cans on wheels.
They were made in metals, in Germany .... and each one of them exhibited a sign that read something on the spirit of "A GIFT FROM THE PEOPLE OF GERMANY"...

Now. Fasten your sit belt..
On the way down hill, we assisted two German couples from East Germany on the side of the road..

I believe it was an old Opel what they were driving, that busted the rubber hose coming from the engine block into the radiator...
Weelll, we've seen those more times than we can remember.. so we knew how to fix the dead hose with almost nothing.(Some rugs wrapped around the busted hose and oil paint that we were able to get at a nearby village ...)

Naturally we made friends .. and they suggested that we have an early dinner/late lunch at Kotor..

We told them that we were warned not to eat in Montenegro. They insisted, indicating that they know 'a place'..

We played it safe. We had macarrony that by definition has to be prepared in boiling water...

I asked our newly acquired friends,.... why out of the countless gifts that the People of Germany could give the People of Montenegro .. they chose trash cans on wheels..??

"Well", one of them answered, "if you would have been here a year ago, you would have seen all the trash piling up on the streets ..."
