i came to this country when i was 1yr old.
i grew up in atlanta ga primarily with americans.
not in miami.
but as soon as i entered my home, i was in CUBA.
that is why i grew up to be pretty succssful. i am also a retired veteran (20 years).
i currently live in south tx.rampant poverty with 10th generation immigrants.i'm not gloating ,this is what i see.
the culture in cubans is special (to me anyway)
it explains our success.
as we all know...there was an hundred year old church in havana when the pilgrems landed on plymouth rock
Very true, our culture is special, that is why we had being successfuls in every country we have live.It also happened to my daughter that wasn't even born in Cuba, after two days in Cuba(In my last trip to Cuba I took her with me,and it was her first time in Cuba)while watching huge Cuba flag ,teras came from her eyes..I was worry to see her like that, and I asked her, what was happening to her, that why was she crying.?She then look at me and proudly said"Papi, my tears are of joy,I feel I'm a Cuban too"That has been my happiest day in live,I felt very proud about us!

Well said brother! Thanks for sharing that bit of history. I didn't know that! I checked it out & it's true. Thanks again for the history lesson, hermano.
yes, havana was a thrving modern city for that era.our culture stems from a mix of many thriving european cultures.spain didn't have enough sailors.the powers that be allowed any man from a ctholic country to sail under the spanish flag. hence the varied cuban surnames. i know personally cubans with surnames ranging from rodolfo Tucker, guido jones, angelita weiskof(misspelled), or gattorno etc, my own last name is portugese

US Census Bureau. Facts about Cuban American:
Cuban Americans have acquired an enormous amount of wealth and prosperity in an extremely short period of time; no other immigrant group has achieved this as quickly as the Cubans. Many immigrants have never achieved it at all, despite being in this country far longer than Cubans. Second-generation Cuban-Americans were more educated than even Anglo-Americans. More than 26.1% of second-generation Cuban-Americans had a bachelor's degree or better versus 20.6% of Anglos. Thus Cuban-Americans in 1997 were approximately 25% more likely to have a college degree than Anglos.
Other Hispanic groups lag far behind. Only 18.1% of South Americans had a bachelor's or better. Puerto Ricans, despite being U.S. citizens by birth, recorded a disappointing 11%; Mexicans only 7%.
In 1997, 55.1% of second-generation Cuban-Americans had an income greater than $30,000 versus 44.1% of Anglo- Americans. Thus Cuban-Americans are approximately 20% more likely to earn more than $30,000 than their Anglo-American counterparts. All other Hispanic groups lag far behind in average income.
In 1997, 36.9% of second-generation Cuban-Americans had an income greater than $50,000 versus 18.1% of Anglo- Americans. Cuban-Americans were twice as likely to earn more than $50,000. Also, approximately 11% of Cuban-Americans had incomes greater than $100,000 versus 9% of Anglo-Americans, and less than 2% of other Hispanics.
Cubans comprise less than 4% of the U.S. Hispanic population, Mexicans 65%, Puerto Ricans 10%, Central and South Americans 11%, and "others" 10%. Yet of the top 100 richest Hispanics in the U.S., more than 50% are of Cuban descent (ten times what it should be on a population basis), and 38% of Mexican descent. The rest is scattered among all other Hispanic groups.

This may or may not be all 100% true, but this is talking about the cream of the crop of Cubans that left Cuba from 1959 onward, till about 2000, and thank God they all dearly passed all of those same high principles and better educations to their children and their grandchildren as well. For this Most Cuban Americans must be commended...But now come the reality check...Most people coming now adays from Cuba since 2000 onward, are usually Gineteras (prostitutes) low life gnagster like men and women, who are now much more lazy and unambitious than their original counterparts who were hard working go getters..More and more are getting into plan 8 (welfare) and the low income housing in most of Miami area is made up mostly of them now a days...As the old Cubans and their baby boomers start to die out and retire, these new criminally minded lazy Cubans will start to take over where the old Cubans left off and they will begin to evolve and assimilate much more so to those other Latinos they have continuosly and condescendingly looked down on for so many years now till this very day.

For a somewhat different point of view - There are many well educated, decent, and intelligent Cuban Americans in the U.S. and they are all more than welcome - even those whom you have described in not so nice terms above as coming since 2000.

If you take a close look at the rapid migration of Cubans to the U.S. immediately following the triumph of the Revolution you will find a mix of Cuban citizens, some very decent. But there were many who fled knowing that because they had gone to bed with Batista and his brutal, indulgent regime and had profited financially at the expense of millions of their fellow brothers and sisters. These are the same Cubans who were in bed with the Mafia out of Las Vegas, New York and Chicago. They were a part of the degenerate, wide-open casinos, live sex shows, and shady business deals that raped Cuba of her natural resources for the greed of profit and U.S. Corporations. They also fled Cuba after draining the banks and the Cuban National Treasury.

To call ALL those who fled in 1959-61 as wonderful, well-educated people is a gross rewriting of that period of history.

Conversely, to call ALL who have fled Cuba since 2000 as the rift-raft of Cuba is also a distortion of the facts. Yes, some are criminals but no worse than those criminals in with Batista and the Mafia in 1959 who made their wealth in highly questionalbe ways.

Lady Liberty, a gift of the French government, still stands in the harbor of New York welcoming all the tired and weary who struggle for Freedom.

There is much wrong with my beloved Fatherland today, largely due to the tragic and ill-advised policies of the Bush/Chaney administration. With all her faults and tragic backward, warlike acts, it is still the land I love and cherish.

What you posted about the Marielito is not true.If you do a research you will find out that out of the more than 120,000 "marielitos" that left Cuba in 1980,with the exception of the about 5,000 crimminals and prostitutes that Castro's forced exiles,to take to the US(of which about 1,790 has been returnrd to Cuba,by the US government)most of the Marielito has also became successfuls in the US.Do your research and you will find the truth about the so call "Marielitos"!

Putting it that way....i Agree with you...But no one is better than the other here, except seemingly when there are general degrees of higher education and inherited wealths involved...and it's sometimes very questionable how they all got to that point of higher wealth in their lives? Yes there is good and bad in all races...There are rich and there is many poor...The Cubans of before, as well as the new ones now are living in a different time and day, and in a different era, and they must now or should assimilate to the new ways of life today and leave alone the old outdated past and regretful days of yesterday, that cannot be redone or go'ed back to, and go on towards the future as it is only to that future hope and place that we can all go forward to and learn to live together as one..

Well, I'll be doggone! You are still waiting on the knock at the door, the phone call from the Feds! "The mills of the gods grind slowly, but exceedingly well!" And just when you thought you were 'off the hook'(English figure of speech).

I never mentioned anything about the Marielitos of 1980, as most of them did turn out to be just fine hard working prosperous Cubans after all...We are talking about those that are coming in now, since 2000 onward..they are a total different kind of breed of Cubans, you know it and I know it too as I deal with them everyday in the greater Miami area. They are lazy, liars, swindlers, jineteras, and many are getting into welfare, left and right, and or becoming "Papi Chulos" or "Mami Chulas" jineteras.
Like I said all cultures and all races do have their good as well as their bad too...Don't you agree Mr.WJDC?

Thanks for the response. Take care with WJDC - disagree with him and you will be labled a Castro a**kisser and worse. Keep your progressive views present on this site, they are rare. Especially when asking these folks to put away their hate which they love.

Now I see what you mean.Yes ,I do agree that a lot of them can be as you said. They are "The children of the Revolution",hand fed by Castro himself! No values, believe that they deserve every thing, don't like to work, and envy the rest of the other Cubans exiles. Is shameful and hard for me to accept that a Cuban can be like that...but it is True,no question about that!
