Greeks argue over statue of Alexander

Full story: www.guardian.co.uk

For a warrior king who had conquered most of the known world by the age of 33, Alexander the Great never flinched when it came to a fight. But even he might have been left powerless by a row in Greece over the location for a statue carved in his likeness in 1972.

Alexander's letter to Persian king Darius in response to a truce plea:

" ...Your ancestors came to Macedonia and the rest of Hellas and did us great harm, though we had done them no prior injury. I have been appointed leader of the Greeks, and wanting to punish the Persians I have come to Asia, which I took from you..."
Arrian, Anabasis of Alexander II, 14, 4 (Loeb, P. A. Brunt)- Arrianos II (Anabasis) Historian, 95-175 AD

Alexander of Macedon I :
5-They at once, hearing this, made haste to the outpost, where they found Alexander, who addressed them as follows:"Men of Athens, that which I am about to say I trust to your honour; and I charge you to keep it secret from all excepting Pausanias, if you would not bring me to destruction. Had I not greatly at heart the common welfare of Greece, I should not have come to tell you; but I am myself a Greek by descent, and I would not willingly see Greece exchange freedom for slavery. Know then that Mardonius and his army cannot obtain favourable omens; had it not been for this, they would have fought with you long ago. Now, however, they have determined to let the victims pass unheeded, and, as soon as day dawns, to engage in battle. Mardonius, I imagine, is afraid that, if he delays, you will increase in number. Make ready then to receive him. Should he however still defer the combat, do you abide where you are; for his provisions will not hold out many more days. If ye prosper in this war, forget not to do something for my freedom; consider the risk I have run, out of zeal for the Greek cause, to acquaint you with what Mardonius intends, and to save you from being surprised by the barbarians. I am Alexander of Macedon. "

i agree with evgenija...
Alexander the Great is not ours...
he is one of us...
we are his children.
Tito started an issue about Macedonia 60 years ago.
we talk about macedonian history wich is over thousands of years...
don't you close your eyes to the truth because of a propaganda that has being taking place for 60 years wich was designed and executed by CIA an helps just american interests...

don't let them make you pawns of their plans.
you have history yourselves and you don't need to steal from no neighbor.Americans don't have history.that's why they don't respect it.that's why they want do destroy everyone else's history.
look at the slaughter of indians and aztecs.

search for your true roots in the slavik trades of the ancient years and you will be proud of your origin...don't make yourselves look fool trying to make our history yours because you are just losing vital time for the search of your real history...

i feel no hate for you neighbors because i know that you are misinformed and all you do flows from that.that doesn't mean that if you keep doing it i will tolerate it...
there is a line...i hope that you wake up before you pass it...

i would be glad when you opened your mind too...
from all the things that i have written was that the only one that you have noticed?
yes Alexander the great is not ours.we are Alexander the Greats children.we belong to him.

don't stick to things that raise thw tone of the conversation.
stick to the substance...
this is that you have being misinformed so that you will serve american interests in balkan.
keep believing that you are Macedonian if you want.but see around you if my word has a point.search and don't just go with what you are told.
when the issue for Macedonia came in 1991 i had the same questions.
i thought that we Greeks could be misinformed so we could be wrong about you.
all those years i keep my eyes open to see a fault in the history i have been taught.
so far nothing changed it.
so i came to the conclusion that it's the true version...:)
i don't think that you will change in a moment.you have been brainwashed for 60 years.
but if you just have a curious eye in what they tell you it will be a begining for you to break the chains...
thank you my neighbor.
i think that it wouldbe better if we talked face to face because there is no voice color in those letters..:)

Priape how are you?

I think our disscusion for the name will be postponed. the economic crisis is so deep everywhere in Europe, and all national economies will have to deal with that first. To be quite honest in spite of my personal optimisam in life, I think that very difficult times are in front of us all.:(

It is realy intersting to see how is possible our neghbours from Hellenic Republic to use the have within their government Ministry Ministry of Northern Greece. And then on 19 August 1988, to rename that name into the to Ministry of Macedonia-Thrace. It is interesting to analyze why within the Hellenic republic’s government was necessary to have special Ministry for one region. The truth is because that piece of land that belong to them after The Balkan Wars of 1912-13 when geographical region Macedonia that was under Ottoman suzerainty was divided between three countries (Kingdom of Greece, Serbia (Yugoslavia) and Bulgaria. When somebody occupy some piece of land, than must have special ministry for that region, because there must be in place special measures in order that piece of land to become “really” Greek.
And what happened to the slave names of the towns and villages – they all got Greeks name. What happened to Slave people that where defining them as Macedonians? They were ethnically cleansed by the Greeks officials with interchange of the population with Bulgaria and Turkey.
What happened with the basic human rights of the people to speak their language and to feel how they want to feel by ethnicity? They rights were completely not respected and unfortunately that is happening until today.
But that is PAST! All countries have been doing nasty stuff to parts of their nations in last 1-2 centuries. I hope that we will have will to find ways how to live together now and in the future.
I hope that intellectuals and wise people in the Hellenic republic knows about what their “nest of democracy” did to one ethnic group in their countries – Macedonians, that has been living in Greek part of Macedonia for many ages.
And about the name dispute. How can somebody restrict to somebody else usage of the name?
Vasilis how you will react if somebody says you cannot use the name Vasilis, because Vasilis is my name. please change the name if you want to have good relations with me? How stupid is all that. And of the top of everything, this is violation of the basic human rights of people to feel and to call them self hoe they feel. I am so disappointed by the country that is part of EU, that is considering itself as democratic?!? This is so stupid issue created by the politicians in order to have what to “offer” to their people.

Daily Horoscope for December 22

Leo

If you ask someone to give you a hand today, don't be surprised if they make a mess of it. That's probably because their mind isn't on the job, but it might also be because your instructions aren't as clear as usual. So before you get angry, check that what you said made sense. Relations with someone older or more influential than you could also be blighted by confusion or doubt now.
