Islamabad, May 10 : Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has reportedly advised President Pervez Musharraf that Indian inmate Sarabjit Singh, accused of having a hand in 1998 Lahore bomb blasts, should be pardoned after his case is given a re-look.

"I have advised to the President that he should stop his execution and it should be reviewed by the Ministry of Interior, Foreign Affairs, Law Justice and Human Rights," The Nation quoted him as saying in an interview with an Indian TV news channel.

He also said that the matter was being reviewed by Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"They will think on those lines. They will consider whether the case is fit or whether the case is not fit and they'll take the decision," he added.

Sarabjit has been languishing in Lahore's Kotlakhpat jail for the past several years and is facing death sentence after being found guilty of planting Lahore bomb blasts which claimed many lives in 1998.

But, his family claims that he has been arrested on mistaken identity, and that he had strayed into Pakistan's territory by mistake. Recently, the Pakistan government had allowed his family members, including his sister, wife and two daughters to meet him inside the Kotlakhpat jail.

A prominent Pakistani politician has pleaded that Sarabjit Singh, the Indian convicted of spying, must not be hanged. He says carrying out the sentence can become a 'national embarrassment' for Pakistan.

Writing in Pakistan's The News in an opinion piece titled 'Why Sarabjit Singh must not be hanged', Senator Farhatullah Babar of the Pakistan People's Party has likened Sarabjit's case to that of Alfred Dreyfus -- a Jewish captain in the French Army who was banished in 1894 after being accused of being a spy but was allowed to return home in 1906 when the charge was found to be untrue.

'We may have serious differences with the Indians but it must not persuade us to hang every Indian at the drop of a hat. The Sarabjit Singh trial must not be allowed to become our national embarrassment as was the Dreyfus trial in France. He must not be hanged,' Babar, a close aide of former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto, said.

Besides, there have been innumerable cases in Pakistan where people have been executed on charges that were later found to be false, wrote Babar, a member of the Defence Committee of the Senate.

Pakistan is willing to consider extradition of Dawood Ibrahim.

Amritsar/Islamabad , May 03: Sarabjit Singh's family home near Amritsar erupted with joy on Saturday after Pakistan's government put off the hanging of the Indian death row prisoner indefinitely raising hopes of him escaping the noose.

"Sarabjit's execution has been stayed," Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah said in Islamabad.

Asked for how long would the execution process be halted, Shah said on Saturday's order postponing the execution does not mention any time-frame. The execution was stayed till further orders by the government of Pakistan and the President of Pakistan, according to Sarabjit's lawyer Rana Abdul Hameed.

Sarabjit's wife, daughters and sister offered prayers at a Gurudwara at Bhikiwind village in Amritsar district and exchanged sweets. Scenes of joy were witnessed amid hopes that Sarabjit may walk free after spending 18 years on death row in a Lahore jail.

"Now I am expecting that the Pakistan Government in the next few days would definitely extend the clemency," said Dalbir Kaur, sister of Sarabjit.

Sarabjit, whose family say he is the victim of mistaken identity, was to be hanged on April 1 after being convicted of involvement in 1990 blasts that killed four people in Lahore.

But President Pervez Musharraf, who had earlier rejected a mercy petition, delayed execution until April 30. The execution was further delayed by Pakistan authorities a few days before April 30 on technical grounds.

Significantly, the latest reprieve for Sarabjit, who is lodged in a Lahore prison for the last 18 years, comes days ahead of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee's visit to Pakistan on May 21.

Moves are also afoot in Pakistan to commute death sentences to life and Sarabjit may be benefited if it goes through.

Sarabjit was originally set to be hanged on April 1, and his execution was initially deferred for 30 days by Musharraf. This was done so that Pakistan's new government could review his case following an appeal for clemency from the Indian government.

Following Gilani's intervention, Pakistani authorities put off the execution "until further orders".

Sarabjit Singh, whose family says he is the victim of mistaken identity, and that he was wrongly convicted for 1990 blasts in various cities of Pakistan, which claimed 14 lives.

The stay of execution came days after Singh's wife, daughters and sister visited Lahore to meet him in prison.

The Pakistan Supreme Court had earlier rejected an appeal against Singh's death penalty.

Pakistan maintains Singh was an Indian spy, but he and his family say he is a farmer who accidentally strayed across the border into Pakistan while drunk. He has been in jail in Pakistan since 1990.
