Pardon me, but as regards to your grandparents generation handing over the paypacket to the mother, I am curious and do have a question. Are your grandparents White Australians or non-White Australians? This is the first time that I have heard that even Whites used to hand over the paypacket to mothers. I did not know that Whites were like Indians today. Do not be upset, but please do tell me about your ancestral origin. Apparently it was common in australia before and afte r WW2. Most families were poor and needed every penny that every member could provide. My family on both sides are white aussies. I think it has less to do with culture and more to do with economic circumstances. As I was growing up, my parents didn't even ask for rent money, so things had radically changed by the 70s.

It is most embarassing for me to state that in some Indian families the mother collects the paycheck of all her children monthly. That is, you can be 25 years old, and yet you give your entire paycheck to your mother monthly. When you give your entire paycheck to your mother, it psychologically de-empowers you; and it also empowers your mother. In any case, I love my mother. There is nothing better than standing on your own two feet. In USA, at the age of 18, Americans move out of the home and live elsewhere. After age 18 Americans are pretty much on their own. yea.. in India, regardless of faith, the families are like that depending on their class. Christian families are just as tight on their sons as hindus. Muslims tend to be even more tight and force their sons to marry cousins just so the property remains within one family tree. Sikhs prefer to only employ other Sikhs in the workforce etc. I suppose in an environment like India, kids can't move out at the age of 18 or 20 because in such an environment, financial stability is very difficult to achieve. The culture is strongly based on that. That's why i'm glad I no longer live there and would never go back.

Well, as the parent of several young people, I can appreciate how adults have so much more wisdom and experience than their kids. There is something to be said for parents having control over their adult kids as so many of them do really stupid things. On the other hand, young adults need to learn about life their own way, so both cultural experiences have merit. I do remember being young and thinking I knew everything, only to find out how little I reallly knew!

Whats new mate?? It is a confirmed truth that Australia is a racist society, due to isolation from the world, its racist past, subjugation of indigenous, refugees and migrants. Unlike USA where there are millions of other nationalities, accepted as Americans, Australia is continuing with the tradition of acknowledging white Anglo Celtic population as Australians, marginalising majority of ethnic population. In other countries racism is denounced and repudiated, in Australia they try to cover up the racial incidents as a trivial matter of opportunism, backlash or revenge.

54 overseas students got killed in 2007-2008 alone, in last 2 months there was 81 attacks on Indian students, people experience discrmination, assaults, racial abuse on daily basis, if this is not racism, then what it is?? From Parliament, TV, media, Corporations, Police, Judiciary, every one is white, unless there are exclusion and marginalisation policies are in place, racism continues to victimise innocent victims.

Indians half of student deaths in Aus in 08
54 overseas students, nearly half of them Indians, died of various causes in Australia [ Images ] last year, but coroners were trying to suppress the details of the deaths, a leading daily in Melbourne [ Images ] reported today.
The report in The Age, which comes amid a series of racial attacks targeting Indian students in Australia, claimed the toll is higher than the federal government has admitted. State and territory coroners, under the National Coroners Information System (NCIS), have refused an application by the daily for data on deaths of overseas students in the year to November 2008, the paper said.
A spokeswoman for Victorian Coroner Jennifer Coate said the information would not be made public because it was not exhaustive.
"The nationality and occupation of someone who has died is not required to be automatically recorded," she said. The refusal came after the NCIS previously indicated that the information would be made available, the report said. In February, under questioning in Parliament, the government said 51 overseas students died in that year, with 34 dying of "unknown" causes.
Fourteen cases were cited as accidents and three as death from illness. But an investigation by The Age has established the death toll is higher than 51 -- around 54 -- with most coming from India, Korea and China. Nearly half were Indians, the report said adding, Indians were holding one-fifth of the total student visas at that time.
The government numbers showed no suicides, but the real figure is at least three, the daily claimed.
It also carried a story datelined Rampura Phul in Punjab [ Images ], detailing the trauma of the family of Mangat Garg, whose son Razat died after being hit by a train on the western fringes of Melbourne on the Valentine's Day.
The Australian Police suggested that the hospitality management student had committed suicide but the family is alleging murder and is not satisfied with the investigation, the report said. The valuables and cash he was carrying at the time of the incident was not found on his body, Garg said.
The daily quoted a leading expert on international education, Monash University business professor Chris Nyland, as saying that there was a need for a federal advisory body on student safety. Nyland also called for mandatory statistical reporting of international student deaths.
Currently, if an overseas student dies in Australia, the education provider is not required to give a cause of death when it reports the matter to the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.
A spokeswoman for Education Minister Julia Gillard said the law would be reviewed this year and next.
Opposition Immigration spokeswoman Sharman Stone said she sought the data in February because foreign-student organisations suspected under-reporting of deaths. "To have 34 cited as unknown is an extraordinary statistic."
