Why wasn't Kathrada hailed as a hero visiting Connecticut? The struggle in which he participated was one of the greatest social movements of the 20th century. Governor Rell should have honored him in Hartford.

Oh, wait, that's right ... that would mean that Rell and the other politicians would have to come out AGAINST racism and social injustice.

"The first quality of leadership is sacrifice," said Ahmed Kathrada"

But, to paraphrase General Patton, the first quality of SUCCESSFUL leadership is to get the other guy to sacrifice something more.

"that would mean that Rell and the other politicians would have to come out AGAINST racism and social injustice."

From what I know of Kathrada, your attempt to smear Rell with racism for not kissing his cheek is exactly opposite of what Kathrada stands for.

Perhaps you could chose to honor his visit in a more positive way yourself with a little more racial harmony and a little less self-rightous name-calling.

It's amazing that so many Africans felt their life was better under apartheid. Having a black government just because your population majority is black does NOT mean you're having a better government or better quality of life.

Her you have a man who was a terrorist, causing death and damage why should anyone come out and hail this murderer with anything but a shambuck. The group this jerk represented was responsible for blowing up nightclubs in Cape Town killing innocent Americans and South Africans, their crime, being white. So don't think you have a hero you have a former criminal at the little red school house.

Actually your stsements ring so very true. During the white rule the blacks flourished, they had jobs, medical aid, schooling, and respect by most who employed them. Maids had their children educated with white funds, pensions formed, protected often. Look at the place today, it is on the Mugabe Highway and getting closer and closer to replicating the sucess of Black rule, spend time there as an American, live amoung the people and you will learn the truth.

Given that Jeff and several other posters like him howl in anger when a State employee does something bad or when someone receives welfare or people leave each other in peace ... it seems unlikely that if HE were to have his rights and dignity taken away and urinated on that he would be so sure that blacks under apartheid were having a great old time.

Look at the plight of the blacks today in their informal settlements, have you ever been to one? Have you ever seen one? Thousands living in plots of land in shacks, sharing a privy, running water a rarity, ever been to Alexander Township? Ever been to Diep sloot? Ever seen the beggars at the robots? Ever seen the men and women dying of AIDS? Maybe you have maybe you have not. I have seen it all and lived it all. I know many many blacks and coloreds in South Africa, many have done well many more have been left behind. You read about some dude who spent years in jail, you read how he has taught the fools mentioned and you get all teary eyed yet we in the US don't know the truth, the truth of murder that continues today. Apartheid just was not as evil as portrayed.

Found guilty in the Rivonia trial of trying to over throw the government by use of violence. Sentenced to life, the dude was also a communist but that is what I would expect to "teach" Bill Clinton, Al Gore and the Great Messiah

Wasn't he entitled to overthrow the apartheid government? Wasn't he entitled to use force? If not, then why were we? Were all of the founding fathers murderers?

Also, none of what you've said makes him a murderer. Who did he kill?

poverty sucks =/= apartheid was good

They are separate problems.

Would you trade your freedom and humanity for the chance for some scraps from your master's table?

Lets start with his incitement to commit murder and work back from there without the obligatory hysteria....
Do you deny that this is a valid charge?????

He ordered the Church Street Bombing in which quite a few woman and Children were killed.

He also had a plan in the pipeline to blow up Capetown Station at exactly the time School Children would be commuting
