Puerto Rico is classified by the U.S. government as an independent taxation authority by mutual agreement with the U.S. Congress. A common misconception is that residents of Puerto Rico do not have to pay federal taxes. Residents of the island pay federal taxes (import/export taxes, federal commodity taxes, social security taxes, etc.) and some even pay federal income taxes (Puerto Rico residents who are federal employees, or who do business with the federal government, Puerto Rico-based corporations that intend to send funds to the U.S., etc). While most residents of the island do not pay federal income tax, they do pay federal payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare), as well as Puerto Rico income taxes. In addition, because the cutoff point for income taxation is lower than that of the IRS code, and because the per-capita income in Puerto Rico is much lower than the average per-capita income on the mainland, more Puerto Rico residents pay income taxes to the local taxation authority than if the IRS code were applied to the island. Puerto Rico residents are eligible for Social Security benefits upon retirement. Puerto Rico is excluded from Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Puerto Rico receives less than 15% of the Medicaid funding it would be allotted as a state. As statutory U.S. citizens, Puerto Ricans may enlist in the U.S. military. Puerto Ricans have been included in the compulsory draft, when it has been in effect. Puerto Ricans have fully participated in all U.S. wars since 1898, most notably in World War II, in the Korean and Vietnam wars, and the current Middle-Eastern conflicts.

Should Puerto Rico decide to consummate her marriage to the U.S.?..." Unlike many of the Spaniards who mixed it up with the local Taino girls and black female slaves and actually married some of them, the U.S. is not remotely considering consummating any such marriage with a colony of predominantly non-white, non-Anglo-Saxon, non-Protestant, non-English speaking natives. Neither is Congress ready nor commited to make it into a State as they are the only ones that can, Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico, can’t. Besides, the golden-egg-laying colony of Puerto Rico produces more in $$$profits$$$ to the U.S. Corporation's goods and services than $$$federal funds$$$ being pumped into the island. If it was not so they've would of had gotten rid of us along time ago. It's all about the money and the power with them and not about it's people. Most, not all, could care less about us personally. The golden egg of Puerto Rico still keeps on laying some profitable eggs to the USA in one way or the other. Puerto Rico has Higher Homeownership, Larger Households Posted by gringo in tropics 6 hrs ago Residents of Puerto Rico had a higher homeownership rate, had more people per household and were less likely to move than U.S. stateside residents, according to an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data from the 2006 Puerto Rico Community Survey. Puerto Rico’s homeownership rate of 74.1 percent was lower than only two states —Minnesota (76.3 percent) and Michigan (75.2 percent). There were 3.13 persons per household in Puerto Rico, compared with 2.61 in the United States, and 7.1 percent of Puerto Ricans moved within the commonwealth in 2006, compared with 13.5 percent who moved within the same U.S. state. These are among the wide range of data now available annually from the Census Bureau’s Puerto Rico Community Survey. Among the other findings are the following: http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/relea...

Now you tell us? to start out with, let me just say this. I have no problem with puerto rico becoming the next state of the union just so long as they can assimilate with the rest of us americans. but once granted statehood, I think the amount of entitlements going towards them should fall in line to what is offered to all other states. 20 BILLION dollars a year is too much. 20 BILLION dollars split between 4 million people is about 5,000 usa dollars per person PER YEAR. that is not fair to the rest of us. the only thing that is standing in the way of this happening is the people of puerto rico themselves. don't blame it on congress. the people of puerto rico in the last century voted 4 times to not pursue statehood. the usa was waiting for you people to say yes - we want to be the next state. but you never said yes. from some articles I read, they say this happened because many puerto ricans were too proud, they thought they would lose their culture - whatever. all I know is this - puerto rico was offered the chance 4 times to say yes, they want to be americans. and 4 times, they replied no. if I were to go to a job interview, and was offered a job by a company, but I delayed going to work 4 times because I had to reconsider whether I wanted to actually work there, what do you think would happen? like I said, being an american citizen is a privilege. NOT some thing to be tossed around like so much trash by some non-citizen. if you don't wish to look at being an american as being a privilege, you don't have to be one. and frankly, if puerto rico does another vote and says no one more time, I will lobby congress to make sure they never get the chance again. on the subject of foreign aid... on another string, I have been agressively debating the logic of donating so much overseas. from sources I have researched, I discovered that between private and the government, america donated on average over 250 billion dollars each year to foreign countries.(this includes the amounts to puerto rico.) I am on many strings debating many topics INCLUDING illegals, puerto rico, AND china.

Read the US newspapers, if you can get a copy somewhere in Bangkokville. There's always something there on a daily basis. It's been that way since its' inception. I'm for stern border enforcement. If I had it my way, I'd be for a right wing police state that would deal effectively with any and every aberrant US society produced. But luckily, for many in power, I don't have it my way. Some freedoms need to be curtailed in order to secure the existence of the state. The US has been longed lulled with idea of civil liberties to the point where it has become a saturated notion, leaving it all too open to individuals wanting to do it harm. Illegal aliens of criminal vintage are part of that segment that should be dealt with effectively and at any cost. And I mean all of them, not just the Mexicans or the Hispanics, like you've alluded to in your past posts. Being just anti-hispanic leaves you open to some really serious criticism that you might have trouble diggin' yourself out of. Some, on the other hand, are admitted racists, so it doesn't matter at all in their extent. Are you one of them? You say you're a person of Buddhist beliefs. That's rather hard to believe, since those that I've known are usually not as stern about issues concerning police enforcement. Are you sure you ain't BS'ing me? from your essay, I guess it is safe to say you are NOT - pro-illegal? if so, then, we are in agreement. so, where do you come off calling me racist? perhaps you didn't catch the drift that I was talking about illegals? I believe in many aspects of buddhism. I wouldn't call myself a full fledge believer, I accept many of the teachings. although I stop short in believing in reincarnation. I care about america a lot. it is my homeland. and that is why I debate agressively for it.

If you see the tax brackets, the 7% tax on goods and services, anybody that are married with two incomes of $50,000 to $75,000 are getting the rear end job as taxpayers...
They always say year after year, decade after decade...we don't pay federal taxes....hello!!!
There are strictly two benfits for taxpayers of the Island..Retired Incomes and the Rich over $200,000 a year incomes....
Once Puerto Rico ends this stone age property tax tasion....we will be the highest Territory, State, War Booty or ELA with the tax rates over everybody...
Where's the libraries, the public parks, the adequate public trasnportation for the entire Island and not just Bayamon and Hato Rey...
The "New " Puerto Rico is Juncos, Gurabo, Cupey and Caguas and Cidra.....that's where the future tax base of Puerto Rico will be in the next 50 years....
Carolina and Bayamon are saturated with retired people and no growth can be anticipated....I am surprised that Cupey is not a separate district from Rio Piedras and Guaynabo....
This is the future of Puerto Rico for everything...

Frito Donker wrote: <quoted text> Puerto Ricans are Americans by birth. Your insinuations are that they're not. This shows clearly your subjective and distasteful viewpoint against the Puerto Ricans. Why? And given their colonial status, that was established by Congress retroactively back to 1898 , they have the right and the option to either accept or deny their commonwealth status with the US. They're not a foriegn country. Congress is very specific about that. They are a territory and an integral part of the US. Again, they are Americans by birth. There is no privilege. It's an inate right. Their passports are US. You say you have friends that are Puerto Rican? I'm sure if they knew the way you expressed yourself about them, which is extremely ignorant and uninformed, they wouldn't be your friends much longer. And why would you be concerned about the expropriation of money to the island when you don't even live here in the US? That has no real effect on you. Do you pay taxes like we do? Besides, the moneys in Federal funding to any given State far exceed those that are given to Puerto Rico. What about the US's other territories like Guam, American Samoa, and Swains Island and the money they receive? Do you feel the same way about them? Given what I've seen, I'm sure you don't. so many questions. where should I begin.. 1) I was merely stating a fact when I said that puerto ricans are not permanent citizens of usa. until they are GRANTED this status by the usa, they are still in limbo. do you know what a fact is? refer to the following source under "international status". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico 2) you ask why I am so concerned about the money GIVEN to puerto rico each year by our government? the question should be - why should we give this money to you? the people of puerto rico have voted 4 times that they do not want to pursue statehood. another FACT. my argument is - why should we give you money if you don't want to be a state of the union? in my mind, this money can be spent on americans who really need the money. why spend it on non-americans? get my drift? supporting sources.. http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/row/RL32933.pdf http://www.census.gov/prod/2008pubs/fas-06.pd... http://www.hacienda.gobierno.pr/downloads/pdf... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._sta... http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0207/291... 3) as for your question on why I don't feel the same way about money spent on other territories like puerto rico? the answer is - who says I don't? but in consideration of the amounts involved, you are logically the first to tackle since of all the territories like entities, america spends the most on puerto rico. refer to above sources... every nickel and dime that america spends is a concern to me BECAUSE obviously - I am an american. every nickel and dime that my government spends needlessly means less money for us. does that make sense to you? furthermore, if my government spends all the money in the social security fund to fund the free entitlements given to the illegals, I could possibly lose my retirement benefits when I retire in 7 years. AND FRANKLY, THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Frito Donker wrote: <quoted text> If you love America so much, then what are doin' over there? It just seems so hypocritical in light of your fervent deplay against hispanics and your opinions concerning the immigration issue. I don't get the impression that you're against all illegalls, just the hispanics or the Mexicans. Also, you seem to be lumpin' in the Puerto Ricans into the immigration issue, when in fact they have nothing to do with that. Remember, the US is an country of immigrants composed of a vast array of different groups. Some are subcultural (ie. the Blacks) and some are associated with the power structure (White). If you are Asian, then you are definitely not a memeber of the power structure, and should be sensitive to the plight of other minorities wanting to better themselves. Puerto Rico's hispanic culture was long established before the US showed up and made it a colony. It was incorporated because of its' extreme strategic and military value. This is all documented fact. It has made definite strides throughout the years, wherein many are actually bilingual, with English as their second language. What makes you think they're not Americans, when they have sacrificed so much in industry and in wars for the US? Why..., because they don't fit your version? I won't bother with answering all your questions on this post because the answer is so obvious, it is a waste of time. but I will reply to your belief that I am just concerned about the illegals who are mexican... if you could read all my postings, you would see that I don't filter out just one race. anybody who is illegal is taking advantage of america. more so if they are getting freebies which are coming out of MY pocketbook. I have no problems with gays, blacks, hispanics, etc. anybody of any race. hell, I lived in san francisco for close to 20 years. and I have many friends who are bi. one even helped me get several jobs while I was living in san francisco for which I will always remember. bottomline, if the money spent on the illegals is going to cause me to lose my retirement benefits, and it appears to be the case from many reports, I will be hell bent on getting some revenge. as for the illegals.. I repeat... IF THEY ARE ILLEGAL, THERE IS ONLY ONE THING THAT NEEDS TO BE CONSIDERED - DEPORTATION.

You throw out sources to back your claims, but your claims of they not being an integral part of the US are never served. They are in fact US citizens. Is that hard for you to understand? What is your problem? And you lump me in the same category with the islanders when in fact I'm a third generation mainlander of high standing in my community and you don't know a hill a beans about me. Your attempts to belittle and then substantiate a point that is rooted in prejudice with sources that don't back your claims are irrational and illogical to say the least. You have a bais against the Puerto Rican. Is that so hard for you to admit? Zig zagging and making a complete fool of yourself on this point makes you look that much more ignorant as a racist. Lighten up. Admit you're a racist against the Puerto Ricans. You'll make it easier on yourself. Did something happen with a Puerto Rican that you hate them so much? With relation to your Social Security analogy, here again, you insist on lumping the Puerto Rican with the illegal alien issue. They are different and not the same. Why is that so hard for you to understand, if it isn't for some apparent biased reason? And every cent that is being spent on Puerto Rico is in fact being spent on Americans, because that's what they are. What's your problem, if it isn't for the obvious? let me make this very simple... why should america support people who are not americans OR who do not want to be americans? puerto rico has voted 4 times not to pursue statehood. they don't want to be americans. and let's cut the bs, you don't have all the rights of americans, you are not americans. and you won't be until you are a state.

YOU and many of your fellow puerto ricans hate america. you just want us around for the free handouts. asian guy: There are some assertions in some of your posting that, in my opinion, are lacking clarity… Puerto Ricans ARE Americans, and just because one doesn’t understand that it means the contrary… Puerto Rico is not Anti-American; on the contrary, there is obvious Americanism everywhere throughout the island… Just because Puerto Rico voted against statehood, does not automatically means that Puerto Rico hates USA… There are more Americans complaining about America than one could find in Puerto Rico… Freedom of Speech is not Anti-American… Inside-the-box-thinking is not recommended for speculations… I noticed that your IP is from "far-away". Were you a student here...?
