That song, real title "Das Lied der Deutschen" is almost always misinterpreted, due to the influence of Hitler. It did not originally mean Germany over all of the world militarily, but rather, that the people should admire their country for their achievements and traditions, and combine all of the German states to form a single country. It was written in 1797 in support of the unification under the Weimar Republic.

By the way, the third stanza is the current German National Anthem.

Sorry, the way I wrote that previous post, one is led to believe that Hayden wrote it in support of the Weimar Republic. That, of course, is not true. It was written with unification the idea, but the Weimar did not come along until much later, with the same ideals.
Which shows why I read German history, and I don't write it.
