Thirty percent of Russians said the intelligentsia does not influence the processes underway in the country (compared to 40 percent in 2006), and 41 percent said its influence is minor (39 percent in 2006).
Seventeen percent said intellectuals have a great deal of influence (14 percent in 2006).
Forty-three percent of Russians think the Russian intelligentsia consists of professors, academics, scientists and research workers (33 percent six years ago).
Thirty-four percent say intellectuals include teachers, 31 percent - writers, 29 percent - doctors, 29 percent - artists, actors and other representatives of creative professions. Twenty-one percent listed journalists among the group.
A total of 49 percent think there is almost no intelligentsia left in Russia. Thirty-eight percent disagreed with that statement.
The March 16-19 poll surveyed 1,633 urban and rural residents aged 18 and above in 130 localities located in 45 regions.
