Hi, I'm a white 40yr old south african living in England because of the crime in SA. I am not racist but I dislike racist whites and blacks. You really seem ignorant. I grew up in Durban and mixed with many people who never voted for the apartheid government and who wanted people to be treated equally. We would not go onto a beach if black people were turned away from it. As university students we would not go into a restaurant that would not serve all races. I never mixed with black people at school, I never had the opportunity, they were hidden away in townships and kept out of the suburbs. When working at Joburg general hospital I spoke up for the black workers who were earning a pittance and for others who were able and should've been promoted. I spent many hours arguing with people with other attitudes about how we are all the same with the same needs and fears and how marrying a black person would be perfectly acceptable to me if i was in love with him. There are many white South Africans who are unjustly labeled time and again.

Well Good for you. The fact remains that South Africa for many years was under an Aparthied System which was similar to what the blacks experienced here in my homestate of Mississippi. They were denied equal opportunities and rights. They had no choice but to FIGHT BACK.

Here in America even MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. was jailed during the Civil Rights Era for what the white folks called "stirring up trouble". Rosa Parks was jailed because she refused to move to the back of the bus. Now both of these blacks (and I am black) have MONUMENTS ON THE WASHINGTON CAPITAL AT THE WHITE HOUSE.

Whenever people are oppressed and poor THEY WILL FIGHT. I am sorry you had to flee to South Africa but I believe crime in SA will eventually decrease once blacks start getting equal treatment.

Oh and by the way, White people are some of the most SAVAGE PEOPLE. EXCEPT THEY ARE SAVAGE ON A "MASS SCALE" BECAUSE THEY HAVE MONEY. Poor People are confined to their neighborhoods.

My most recent visit to SA was in October. Black staff at avis, restaurants, cinemas, shops were very friendly and helpful and it was good to see black people living and working alongside white people.

I do feel that apartheid caused misery and poverty for black people and that this was the cause of crime. However it is not an excuse to let it persist. My cousin had a gun put to his head in September and was lucky to loose money and mobile. He had just taken one of his staff to hospital and given him money and helped fill in forms..he is dying of aids but the government provides no medicine. My aunt's car was found burnt out 200 miles from Johannesburg yesterday. A body was found nearby. She has spent the last 15yrs running a multiracial nursery. She is in her 70's a sweet, kind, gentle person.

Apartheid messed with people's minds causing deep seated prejudices and fears. But the people carrying out today's crimes are opportunists who are getting away with murder.

Well now your response is typical of what South Africans hate. You have probably never left your hometown, much less, been to South Africa but you feel you have the information at hand to comment.

The problem in SA is not so much one of race but rather of lawlessness, black taxi operators and politions being the worst. It's not only white South Africans that suffer because of this. Black coworkers arrive at work some mornings scared out of their wits by taxi divers endangering their lives, and they have to pay the man for that! What is annoying is watching the police/traffic wardens ignore a taxi driving on the sidewalk at 30mph, they don't grasp that we are one step from anarchy. Visit one big African city to witness where whe are heading.

Most white and black South Africans get along fine, our politicians are the problem.

One thing that jumps out at me regarding most of the comments submitted on this topic, is that they are coming from foreigners.
South Africa is a wonderful country, which does not necessarily mean that I do not look over my shoulder every 5 seconds to see that I am safe. The last 12 years have been a real up and down battle for all South Africans (colour aside!). The life styles for most South Africans, who actually were affected by the atrocities of apartheid, have not changed much. The poor black communities still live in fear, but instead of the "riot" police it is now hardened criminals who rape, torture and murder innocent people. The middle class white communities have not grown in wealth or stature, in fact they barely make ends meet. The only people to have truely gained in the past 12 years are the now ruling politicians.
I have been fortunate enough to be an extremely hard working male. I have worked my way up through school and paid for myself to gain an Aeronautical Engineering degree for which I have been justly rewarded. I have now been recognised by an international firm and have been offered a permanent position in Canada. It has been a tough decision, but owing to the fact that I am recently married and wish to start a family, my decision has been made slightly easier. I am not willing to stake the lives of my wife and future children on the inadequacies of the current ruling government. The criminals that currently rule our streets take pleasure in committing these crimes. They shoot children, rape babies of only a few months old.
The crime is getting so bad that criminals are now being dragged out into streets by the communities that they terrorise, and are literally ripped apart. These are the front page cover stories for our youth to read. At least I will be able to sleep soundly again!
South Africa's loss is Canada's gain...
I have many friends from all races and every single friend says that this is the best decision that I could ever make.
