Web-programming is tough and I've created sites where for easiness sake I've listed bald as hair-colour too because it is more difficult to let the user select "other" then let a new selection with "bald" appear. it's a state of hair just as grey is a state of hair. Atheism is similarly often listed under faith sections. The atheist faithful are just as irrationally passionate about it as others are about their own religions. It seems to be an organised mission to convert. I cannot see a difference.

An agnostic would say: "I don't know if there is a god or not".
An atheist would say: "There is no god".

Minnie wrote: <quoted text> First principle of atheism uk : "God does not exist" That is not the same as saying "I don't know" That's true, and it maybe the position they choose to take. But it is not a basic requirement of atheism, according to most definitions. Literally a-theism is "not theism". As such, atheism cannot be considered more than a category that defines everybody who is NOT THEIST. This is a rather broad category that includes a lot of different thought. Just like theism is a category that includes a lot of different thought. You want to shoehorn all atheists into one very narrow band of thinking, but that's bigotry plain and simple. Again, are you an "a-baptist"? What in the world does that tell anybody about what you are?

I have always found that self-confessed atheists try to convince others people, mostly among the so-called intellectuals. Somer atheists display the same fanaticism than some believers.

ronan wrote: An agnostic would say: "I don't know if there is a god or not". An atheist would say: "There is no god". The modern "agnostic" position is a cop out for a person who wants to delude himself into believing that both the theistic and atheistic positions are equally valid. They are not equal. It is possible that a god of some description exists? Well, I can never completely rule out the remote possibility. But the plausibility for such is so absurd as to be delusional. In fact, I have never, ever heard a description for a set of properties for any entity which could possibly exists and which could rightly be labeled a deity. Never. The god of the Bible / Torah / Quaran is so easily dismissed as false as to be laughable. And all of the other attributes that one would normally wish to ascribe to a deity can just as easily be shown to be absurd. So, I'm still waiting for a description of a deity that could possibly exists, then we can begin to talk about observable and measurable evidences for such a deity.

"Somer atheists display the same fanaticism than some believers. " and some people just can't spell, either due to poor schooling or just being a foreigner. And the bad grammar helps as well!

That is not the same as saying "I don't know" One can be a gnostic atheist, one who knows there's no god. Gnosticism is about knowledge, theism about belief in a deity. Atheism is the lack of such belief. This can be strong or weak (in my case it's strong, I'm a gnostic atheist)

wee honeybee wrote: <quoted text> How many of those do we still believe in 2012? They were believed far longer than christianity. Except for belief in witchcraft, which is still in existence, and still causing executions in Africa and the muslim world, they all eventually came to be discredited. So, the length of time something has been believed in is no evidence that it is true. Since you cite the length of time christianity has been believed in as some sort of evidence of its validity, it is interesting that you now apparently concede that other, far older beliefs are no longer in favor. Someone living in 1400 would have had the same attitude about the belief in a flat earth that you do today. The mere fact that you live in the time before an error is discovered does not make it less of an error.

LOL you believe that by using the word irrationally passionate you give credence to theism and discredit atheism? Do you at least know what rational means and why religion isn't anything like it?

Until there is an agreed to set of properties for this thing we label "god", the question of existence itself is meaningless. Existence of what? But I also find that the labels "atheist", "agnostic", etc. only define what someone is *not*. These labels provide no information as to who a person is.

Just because I am an atheist some would say that I am a liberal, I am far from it. I am a libertarian and a fiscal conservative one at that, but I still use my knowledge and at times gut instinct to guide my decisions.
