Cayman Islands - Cay Compass News Online - DoT apologises to gay kisser

The gay man who was detained by the Royal Cayman Islands Police last week for kissing his male partner on a dance floor, received a written letter of apology from Director of Tourism Pilar Bush. ...

So the one government entity in the Cayman's that offers an apology just happens to be the same one that knows the financial impact tourist dollars (and lack thereof) make on their island.

Wonder if he will get a letter from the local police commander and club owner..... doubt it.

Again, an apology without penance. If this island is truly welcoming of all people and the law doesn't forbid display of affection between men (not even talking sex here), then the government should arrest, prosecute and sentence the man who confronted this guy and his boyfriend at the dance, and the officers of police department who toke him away.
The British Caribbean is well known for its homophobia, both in attitude and the books. A touristic boycott should be organized by gay organizations, and put into effect until these islands realize that their hatred is not only anti-Christian but also primitive, and , one by one, decriminalize same-sex sex. Hurt them were it hurts, since these places depend on tourism for survival.

When traveling in the Caribbean or anywhere check to see if the island or country is homophobic or Anti-Gay. Spending our lackluster US$ in Anti-Gay places just aids promoting their agenda. Screw them...they don't need our help. Some Caribbean Islands are more tolerant than others...Jamaica for instance has a Christian base with hatred of gays. There, they learned nothing from the tactics of slave traders; being intolerant. Public displays of affection isn't tolerated here...why would you think they would tolerate it there! With limited education and diversity, to them it makes no sense. Its like Ted Nugent without a firearm or no shells on Charleton Heston's Grave.

Check with folks that have been to these places before and get an objective opinion...then book your holiday. All that blue water looks nice in pictures until you deal with the locals, hotels, customs and beaucracy. And learn their language...THEIR LANGUAGE.

1. Sorry for the misspell... "took" him away.

First of all that was a public place and NOT everyone want to see two men kissing; do that in the private of your own home….they were warned twice and still they come to people’s country and disrespect there culture; that was wrong!!!!! If it was some other country, they would be KILLED; gun shot in they face; so they should be very thankful that’s all they got…..the moral of the story is; don’t think you can go anywhere in the world and do what u do at home or as you please. It JUST doesn’t work like that. Not here and not everywhere in the world.

If you read the post above, most of us agree. Respect other countries laws and the fact that they were warned.

But thank you, Theresa, you have just reinforced with your own words the very reason we, as a community, would support a boycott of your island.

We will spend our "tourist dollars" elsewhere and when you complain about revenue not coming in anymore, look back at what you posted today and ask who's fault it really is.

Dear Theresa,
It seems that you just opened up about your real feelings about us, gays: You hate us to the point that you want us shot in the face. You wrote KILLED in all caps, and added five exclamation points. You symbolize what most religions are about: hatred, violence and murder.
It also signals the level of ignorance of your people about your own society, since according the report it is not illegal for men to kiss. Also, given that it's a normal behavior according not only to biology, psychology and other sciences, there is no reason for us to hide it simply because some people might hate it: check out some of the history of racism and you will see that interracial kisses offended many. They (or you), may that be a minority or a majority; that is irrelevant since in no democracy can the majority's rights oppress the minority.
Yes, they could've been killed in other country, but again so could've you, since there you are a woman, and therefore a lesser being with no rights and who should keep silent while men talk. Hey, I have an idea, since you are so outspoken about those paradises: I will buy you a ticket to one of those countries if you promise me to be as outspoken and free. My guess it will be a one-way ticket on Economy and return ticket in the cargo compartment, where your coffin will be treated better that yourself by those so welcoming countries. Think about it: it's a win-win situation: you get to prove your point and try to prove me wrong, and the world will be a better place after you're gone.

Yes people should be treated equally which means anyone who breaks the law or the culture of the islands should be held responsible for their actions. Let me get 1 thing clear I DO NOT have a problem with people who want 2 date the same sex, what I have a problem with is disrespectfulness of there action, people have to see that there is a difference in culture among many things here and not because your country accept gays and gives gay rights does not mean that Cayman Islands has to as no country is ruler of the world and it also doesn't mean that they are right, they were told more then once by two different people to stop, but yet they still continue, that telling me right there that they had NO respect for the people around them and the country . I am not going to argue that gay is wrong or right but as far as Cayman sees it, it is not to be done in public and anyone visiting here should respect that. If I was to go to the US or any where in the world to visit and walked around naked on the street I would be arrested for it and do you think anyone there would be sympathetic because my country accepts it? Of course Cayman doesn't accept running around naked but just trying to make a point and let me also make something else clear CAYMAN IS NOT THE ONLY COUNTEY THAT FEELS THIS WAY…… THIS IS WHY I MADE THAT STATEMENT ABOUT THEY WOULD GET KILLED AND GET GUN SHOT IN THERE FACE it was only to let you know that our country doesn’t take these things lightly and I’m sure not everyone in your country or there’s accept gay’s rights ever......this is reality……HAVE A BLESS AND WONDERFUL DAY

I live in Germany, and there are many parts in the country where homophobia is present, and gays must remain in the closet, at least at work. I doubt that there is one country with 100% population informed and accepting of same-sex orientation. I can publicly kiss a man in some areas of Cologne, Berlin, Hamburg or another cosmopolitan city, and just get a couple of curious and indignant looks from some people, especially those who have immigrated from those countries that you've mentioned before. If I were to do that in the suburbs of those same cities, I would probably be attacked in the name of their religion, just as I would in more rural areas of Germany by other people in the name of Christianity and what they think is morality (curious how morality excuses violence, be that physical or psychological against other people who don't seem to fit in their parameters of what Jesus, the prophet of Love, Son of God who is Love, etc. preached).

The point is that ignorance about what being gay really means exists everywhere, and the rejection that follows that ignorance can be subtle or not. To us, on the receiving end of the hatred (yes, hatred... check out the dictionary), it's an insult that hurts our sense of decency and ethical treatment of people. In this case, one man found it disgusting for two men to kiss, and had an off-duty cop arrest him on the grounds that he was breaking the law.

"Funny" thing is, that was a lie. That is what I told you on my previous posting, and you chose to ignore in your reply. There is no law in the Cayman Islands forbidding same-sex couples to kiss. So the whole incident was based on a lie, and followed by another lie, which was the statement that the gay man was not arrested but only taken away. That is called arrest, no matter how hard you try to make it look different afterwards. And it was done by and off-duty cop, who had no right to so. That was also in violation of police procedures, and a clear abuse of power.

Your own Tourist Department official made a statement that your island receives countless gay$ and lesbian$ and that there is no such law, which indicates that your country is not as disgusted with us as your posting may lead to think.

This was not about a law but the personal feeling of a handful of people who think we are not normal, that our existence goes against nature and God, that we are perverts and sexual abominations. A kiss brings that in the forefront of their minds, and they lied and abused their power to react according to their personal believes. By insisting that the gay man broke the law is to play along with these lies and to perpetuate the ignorance and hatred that characterizes most Christians when it comes to gay people.

To you, a quote from your own book. Try to live by it:

"Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs
Love does not delight in evil
but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts,
always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails."

Ok I can keep going on with this back and forth but I won’t because this is not important to me as it is for you and everyone else so this is my final say…… u fail to ignore my point also, my problem with this WAS the lack of respect that these people had for there surroundings; RESPECT IS THE WORD KEY HERE……you can say what you want, a matter of fact you all can keep up with this but on a serious note you just can’t step out and be bold like that,(you even said it)…not everywhere would have given you a warning and not only that they were warned they were asked nicely PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT ANYMORE next point am trying to Make, BE CAREFUL of where you go and be open like that because not everywhere will be so cool or nice, and I’m just throwing this out for everyone who thinks that there brave and think you can do this anywhere BE CAREFUL…..have you guys ever stop 2 think that maybe the reason why the cop arrested this man was for his own safety NO, everybody is just looking at gays should be treated equally and they should have gay rights and stuff like that…….I’m not disputing that they shouldn’t have their rights but hey.. not everywhere sees it like that, and I can name out a hold bunch of countries who would have killed them in a heart beat, which that is wrong but hey.. the world is a mean and harsh place and people don’t have 2 accept what they know is wrong……..LEVITCUS 20:13read that, I’m not here to judge anyone; that is GOD’S work to do…….as I said before and I will say again I personally don’t have a problem with the same sex dating BUT WHAT I DO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IS….RESPECT; RESPECT; RESPECT; and that is one thing you should have when you visit another country; that is what ya’ll fail to realize. Also Cayman is made up of many different kinds of people and cultures half of our population are ex-pats. Like I said before to the everyone here and especially you ignorant senseless ones, I have no problems with gay/by sexuals or lesbians but when there is a community of people who do not like to see it (the same reason the ship was not allowed to dock) because of our culture and religion, yes there isn’t a set law that gays cannot show affection in public but there is the culture and community and there is nothing wrong if he was taken into custody because he was warned! And for you little people who are saying lets take our gay money elsewhere; darling there are millions of people who spend their money here also gays that have no problem with respecting the culture! Take it elsewhere if you please but like I said not all other countries who are even open to gays having their rights; just remember those other countries most of the time don’t give a warning they just do what they have to do and it doesn’t always turn out nice! I really feel sorry for u guys because ya’ll will not be accepted 100% anywhere in the world and that’s just the truth I hate to break it to YOU but the truth is the truth..... peace out!!!!!

1. It seems to be important to you, since you keep coming back to a gay news website. So you are lying. What else is there to do with somebody that lies? It seems that this particular sin does not offend you. Even when you try to appear that gays don't bother you.
2. Respect? You deserve none, since your hatred is so intense and active. You have delusions when you think you are breaking news to me by telling me we will never be accepted 100%. By this, it is obvious that you didn't even read my posting: too many words scare you? Too lazy? Not bright enough?
3. I don't fail to see your point. You are the one who fails to see mine. And both failures are consistent with your Christian attitude, which is based on lying when reality escapes you.
4. I have a Master in Theology, and I know that Leviticus is not about sins (against God) abut abominations (social coding). Leviticus says we should be put to death. Do you support the death penalty to gays? That's God's word, and you are supposed to support it, right? Also, you need to apply it to all other abominations, a long list... have you read Leviticus... as a whole? I guess not.
5. My dear bigot, grow up as human being. There is nothing flattering about reverting to Neanderthal forms.

1) Say what you want, gays do not bother me. The fact that of people choosing to come to a place where gay public display of affection is not accepted openly and disregard warnings was simply what I was trying to emphasize. It’s not SAFE to do so everywhere.
2) For someone with a Master’s degree in Theology love-muffin, it seems that you were too lazy to read the section pointing out where you will spend eternity for committing such acts, send me a post card…
3) There are ex-pats and locals who dislike affection displayed publicly by gays and the gay people who reside there still respect the culture of Cayman. That is so true!“When in Rome, do as the Romans do”.
4) The moral of the story is you don’t need a Master’s Degree to have some respect, grow some guts and stop being so self absorbed Amoeba. It’s not an issue of being educated, it’s simple common sense!!! Post what you want after this, I won’t be reading it….toodles!

I agree with Theresa’s argument. Allow me to shed light on what she tried to spell out for you. She was simply trying to say that the cultures in the Cayman Islands are diverse and Caymanians may be the minority. However, it would be stereotypical to believe that all Caymanians dislike gays or feel so strongly towards them. Every individual has their own thoughts, feelings, likes and dislikes. Some of those feelings are highly influenced by where they are from and their cultural backgrounds. You have to take into consideration the majority of ex-pats who also dislike PDA by gays and the gay people who reside there and still respect the culture of the Cayman Islands. How does that famous saying go?“When in Rome, do as the Romans do”.
For every action there is a reaction, whether good or bad, it’s just the facts of life. I’m sure if people felt strongly about preserving the environment where you’re from and a group of visitors chose to go there and do as they pleased it would be an issue. Regardless if there is no laws in place, it still will create a negative effect just because of what you believe in.
The objective is not to cram religion down vacationers throats, it's just a matter of being courteous to others, as you would like to be done.

Your friend did not try to spell out any better than an infant, and you are not shedding any more light than a black hole. I cannot understand how you keep missing the point...

Let me explain the problem that originated this blogging as logically as I can for you and your friend to understand:

* Fact: A man was arrested-taken into custody by a police officer for kissing his boyfriend in public.
* Premise 1: The only reason to arrest someone anywhere in the world is because that someone breaks a law.
* Premise 2: There is no law in your islands that forbids two men from kissing in public.
4. Conclusion: There were no legal grounds for the arrest.

That should be the end of the argument: no breaking law=no arrest=no news. But for some reason, you people don't understand this basic issue, and instead, you keep repeating the tiresome argument of sensibility.

The police is there to enforce the law, not the feelings of a group, regardless of how big it is. Do you understand this? If so, please answer in your posting.

Oh my God, you are stupider than I thought. You said at first that you understood... and then go with the childish joke about the applause, and go back to missing the point, and this time with CAPS!!! as if screaming will make true what you're saying.

At least at the end you truly confess your violent Christian feelings, although you mask it well. I guess that is OK since because of trash like you I hate your kind, and hope that the next hurricane wipes your kind off this earth. Peace out.

And review my postings later on so you can learn a little bit of wisdom and respect.
