Meet reformist Wang Yang, China's new guard

Full story: Sydney Morning Herald

Wang Yang, the Communist Party boss of China's most populous and liberal province, Guangdong, shoulders great expectations not only because he speaks the liberal rhetoric of the outgoing Premier, Wen Jiabao, but he has taken practical steps to back it up.

I agree. The evolution of China's system of government needs to take place in a manner and pace determined by the Chinese people and not be dictated by others who may not have China's best interest at heart or who do not understand the cultural and historical factors unique to China that have to be considered.

I think this will also draw Australia and China together even more in the sign of a great relationship with the two countries in trade and security.

India has been a weak democracy for decades, and a sloppy, inefficient one at that.

Yes, weak, but not "failed" democracy, like in many African countries. In 1950, China and India's GDP were about the same. Today, China's GDP is 4 times of India's.

India can not feed her own people, not to also bring up India's debt to GDP as well. I believe Wang Yang will be the light for China and the rest of the civilized world.

Today would be a good day to reflect on how far China would have advanced had not the events of Tienanmen stopped the (Slow but steady) process during the opening up. Without that backward step China may have been a more open country today.

Wang Yang, certain ideals of his are progressive but Guangdong when compared to the USA is still very backwards with their judicial system, people get executed and jailed for crimes that in the USA you would just get a little reprimand. In his region people get the death sentence for selling drugs, fraud, embezzlement, pimping, prostitution,
for murder, drunk driving in which someone is killed, et al in America we listen to both sides not just one side. Guangdong executed more people last year than most of the other provinces, I would not called Wang Yang a progressive, he is not American enough in his ideals.

China will change some with the changing of the guards but not much. People thirst for power and protecting that power will keep tight controls in China.

China will always control, it is the money stupid, not the people.

Chinese people labour costs has increased minimum wages by an average 22 per cent in 2011. These are great steps but when Wang Yang is in power, these steps will also go even further.

==========
China's Political Merry Go Round
==========
Who is the new Chongqing Party Secretary ?

Zhang Dejiang’s predecessor was Bo Xilai
Bo Xilai’s predecessor was Wang Yang
Wang Yang’s predecessor was Zhang Dejiang
Zhang Dejiang’s predecessor was Bo Xilai.

[Wang Yang was Chongqing Party Secretary before Bo Xilai. Wang Yang then moved to Guangdong to become Party Secretary, where he replaced Zhang Dejiang.]

The fact that these crimes are not treated seriously in the USA would be a good reason to regard the USA as a morally bankrupt society rather than a society that can be held up as an example for all to follow. Not that I claim that China is better - just different but as a parent I learnt very early on that children need clearly defined rules and a short leash if they could be expected to have good moral standards. I certainly wouldn't want my children exposed to a society where drug dealers were running rampant because the authorities were afraid of the backlash from liberals if they enforced the law.
