Special envoy Kofi Annan said Monday he was horrified by a gruesome weekend massacre that killed more than 100 people in Syria, and called on "every individual with a gun" to lay down arms and stop the killing.
Annan arrived in Damascus Monday for talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad and other senior officials.
"I have come to Syria at a critical moment in this crisis," Annan said as he arrived in Damascus on Monday. "I am personally shocked and horrified by the tragic incident in Houla."
He called on all sides of the conflict to end the bloodshed.
"This message of peace is ... for everyone, for every individual with a gun," he said.
The mass killings Friday in Houla, a collection of villages in the central province of Homs, prompted sweeping international criticism of the Syrian regime, although differences emerged from world powers over whether his forces were exclusively to blame.
Syrian troops shelled several neighborhoods in Hama until the early hours of Monday, killing at least 24 people, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees activist group said. Amateur videos showed a makeshift hospital where several people lay on the floor either dead or wounded. Further details were not immediately clear.
The violence comes at a time of deep concern over the conflict in Syria. The Houla massacre was one of the deadliest single days of the country's uprising, which is in its 15th month.

When Assad's gunmen began to slaughter his family, 11-year-old Ali el-Sayed says he fell to the floor of his home, soaking his clothes with his brother's blood to fool the killers into thinking he was already dead.
The Syrian boy tried to stop himself from trembling, even as the gunmen, with long beards and shaved heads, killed his parents and all four of his siblings, one by one.
The youngest to die was Ali's brother, 6-year-old Nader. His small body bore two bullet holes — one in his head, another in his back.
"I put my brother's blood all over me and acted like I was dead," Ali told The Associated Press over Skype on Wednesday, his raspy voice steady and matter-of-fact, five days after the killing spree that left him both an orphan and an only child.
Ali is one of the few survivors of a weekend massacre in Houla, a collection of poor farming villages and olive groves in Syria's central Homs province. More than 100 people were killed, many of them women and children who were shot or stabbed in their houses.
The killings brought immediate, worldwide condemnation of President Bashar Assad, who has unleashed a violent crackdown on an uprising that began in March 2011. Activists say as many as 13,000 people have been killed since the revolt began.

Learn what Zionism is uneductated scumbag!! It is saying that the State of Israel has a right to exist, and that Jews have a right to a homeland. Why this is any different than Palestinian Nationalism (saying that Palestinians want their own country just for them) is beyond me... especially since Muslims who live within Israel hold full citizenship, full rights, and even hold elected seats in the government, whereas the Palestinian goal is a land where no Jews will be allowed to live except possibly as dhimmi.

Israel does exist as a country, and has for over 60 years, so the goal of Zionism is complete. It's a done deal. At this point anyone who says they are anti-Zionist is basically using an intellectual term to define their desire to eliminate the Jews from their homes while still claiming that they're not anti-Semitic. After all, what other countries do they believe have no right to exist? Israel is not the first or the only country that was created by the U.N. or by world diplomacy, and it is not the first that created a refugee situation at its inception. ..... It's nothing new that in a civil war you have polarization. Russia and China help one side, the Western nations help the other side. Nobody should be surprised that there is a lot of bloodshed and miseries. A friend of an enemy is an enemy and an enemy of an enemy is a friend. And in religions you also have for and against, with God (wrongly?) believed to be involved in the many conflicts. I would prefer that no other countries would interfere with the battles/conflict that would normally end if at least one side had enough suffering.

Excellent Point! By supporting the Syrian regime, the Russians and the Chinese have aligned themselves against the West. The last time China backed a regime (North Vietnam), the Americans were completely driven out and defeated.
