why is the PRC hunting for exclusive resource rights well outside its maritime jurisdiction and–furthermore–why is it concurrently developing a series of weapons directly aimed at negating the intervention of the United States? if the PRC had no other sources of oil, it might make sense, but the PRC can easily purchase oil from Iran or–better yet–further champion the multitude of green projects which it seems to be championing. So why the obstinancy and insistence in owning a body of water and the various small outcroppings of rock therein? Things honestly don't add up, and i'd like an honest explanation from the PRC posters on here as to why this is; not the propaganda they've been fed, but their honest, rationalized opinions as to why the PRC is going out of its way–to the point of violating the economic rights of other nations as mandated by international law–in order to "acquire resources".

If there is a "dotted line" POLICY in 1947, it has NEVER been published. NEVER means until today!
What is new is PRC fabrication that a policy taking shape today had been opened to scrutiny by the world.

Washington's self-proclaimed neutrality on this issue is a lie. It can't be neutral without compromising its own security. So it's time to drop the charade.

Putin showed the world how to do it. Start firing on these PLAN 'fishing boats'. Then they will leave. Beijing has created a conflict where it has no claim. So there is nothing to negotiate with the Philippines. It's Manila's territory. As is always the case in history – that territory will be have to be fought for. It is long past time to prepare for the inevitable. Once the fighting starts, the US will be obligated to support its treaty partner.

There is no need to fight over the EEZ. If all accept UNCLOS, they have the option of peacefully settling their disputes through ITLOS.(and China has the privilege of a judge sitting in this court)
Needless to say, if peace is not China's objective, she is free to gamble with the use of dark force. But then don't cry if, by miscalculation China end up like Nazy Germany or Imperial Japan.
LOOK chinaman CEV, all these arguments of yours is USELESS NOW!

Anyway they were all USELESS to begin with!

China has already begun MILITARIZED all the shoal and is preparing to recapture all the islands Philippines is occupying! Just make the first mistake and it will quickly turned into reality!

So what is the point of debating who is right or wrong!

MIGHT IS RIGHT as USA taught the WORLD!

The OPTION Philippines has chosen has given China the excuse she needed for a MILITARY OPTION! SO just FACE IT and if you believe the world would come to your rescue, so be it! Communist Vietnam waited for her protector Russia to come in 1979, she never appeared!

Is Philippines being play out by USA? I certainly THINK SO!!! Hahaha

Facts about the SUPERPOWER:

1. Only China has been able to match the American Arleigh Burke with their Type 052C Lanzhou-class destroyer with their longer range AESA radar.

2. Within 2 years, Chinese own 5th generation stealth warplanes will be flying in and out of Manila undetected and unchallenged.

3. China DF16 and DF21D ASBM will kept US carriers 2,500 km away from her coast.

4. China today does not depends on GPS but Beidou COMPASS navigation system. SO USA attempts to jam her system is USELESS!
Conversely in a worst case scenario China own anti-SAT HQ16A VLS in 052 and 054 will shoot every GPS satellites over the SCS down.
That is also DAYDREAMING that is as if USA will risked everything to fight a war on your behalf! Hahahahah A lot of noise perhaps and it is all back to normal. Philippines will be totally HUMILIATED then! Hahaha

the Philippines and Vietnam exercise complete jurisdiction over natural resources in the waters and seabed within 200 nautical miles of their shores. These disputed geographic features( Scarborough Shoal, Mischief Reef, and the “oil blocks” off Vietnam ) fall under their jurisdiction notwithstanding squishy, and lamentably commonplace, press reports indicating that Manila and Hanoi “regard” (or “consider,” or “claim”) them as part of their exclusive economic zones. They regard them as such because they are.

How to measure EEZ...It’s very easy. Get out a map. Take a compass, set the diameter to 200 nautical miles, place one end on the west coast of Luzon, and swing a circle out into the South China Sea. You will notice that Scarborough Shoal lies well within your circle. Repeat the procedure for western Palawan, and you get the same result for Mischief Reef. The same goes for the sectors of the Vietnamese EEZ where Beijing wants to auction off oil exploration rights. In short, Beijing is deploying superior power in an effort to repeal basic geometry and clearly written treaty law. Learn to love Big Brother, Southeast Asia.

Vietnam – China Border Treaties

Under the coordination of the Vietnamese Canadian Federation, the Vietnamese communities of Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa will stage a demonstration on Saturday April 27 in front of the embassies of Communist Vietnam and China to protest against the recently implemented Vietnam - China border treaties.

Over the last three years, the Vietnamese Communist Party has ordered the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to sign two treaties with the People's Republic of China: one on land borders on December 30, 1999 and the other on the division of territorial waters in the Gulf of Tonkin on December 25, 2000.

Although the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam has purposely kept all information regarding these treaties from its people, including the 400 representatives in the National Assembly of Vietnam, and the international community,on December 27, 2 001, the first border demarcations officially took place at the border towns of Dongxing (China) and Mong Cai (Vietnam). The new dividing lines in the Gulf of Tonkin show that some 22,000 square miles of Vietnamese territorial waters were ceded to China. These new, unjustly imposed borders and territorial water will mean untold sufferings to the Vietnamese people living in the border areas or off the waters which were ceded to China by the Vietnamese Communist Party.

China has been wasting a lot of effort, reputation and resources to claim SCS for her own, there is noway that can change her route now, you don't expect a tiger to behave nicely when she is hungry, do you?
Can we sit down and calculate the sum of her investment for SCS claim? Well the wasting resource is enormous. Not only for those armed ships to terror neigbors' fishing boats, but all those utilities are burning a huge amount of oil everyday, and if you take into account those support equipments and human resources, you can imagine how much the whole claiming force is consuming day by day.
The onlyway for China is spend more to feature a much more aggressive superpower to create an international recognition of her claims ASAP, then take back those burned oil and resources. An investment is supposed to be fruitful, isnt it?

beggars cant be choosers....

btw... this is funny
.
.

DND Undersecretary Fernando Manalo said the Italian government has expressed willingness to include the weapons systems and other vital accessories of the ships.

“We will not accept what is less than what is installed in the ship,” Manalo said.

This was in contrast with the warship provided by the United States. The US ship was stripped of key components like the close-in weapons system and radars before it was turned over to the Philippines.

Last year, the Philippines acquired the US Coast Guard cutter that was renamed BRP Gregorio del Pilar to improve its territorial defense capabilities.

The government spent P450 million for the vessel’s transfer costs but the amount did not cover some of the ship’s components.

While the stubborn PINYOY contine their campaign of highlighting the UNCLOS and the EEZ, here is a tricky one.

Heard of Zhongsha island claimed by Taiwan, PRC and even Philippines? Vietnam is not involved!

Since it is well outside of the 200 nautical miles EEZ and 116 degree meridian, on WHAT BASIS is Philippines claiming it?????

Hahahahahaha Philippines is acting on behalf of her MASTER! Because these islands can act as monitoring station for the undersea traffic which concerns the SUPERPOWERS including PRC, USA and even Russia.

Hahahahahahah

China's claims to sovereignty have no basis. Ancient maps, traditional fishing grounds, and old explorers are not enough to establish sovereignty. Both China and Philippines signed UNCLOS, and the areas in question fall within Philippines Exclusive Economic Zone.
If China wants anyone in the world to believe its rhetoric about respect for other nations, mutual respect and beneficial treatment of other nations, blah, blah, blah, this kind of behavior will have to end.

The uninvited guest: Chinese sub pops up in middle of U.S. Navy exercise, leaving military chiefs red-faced

By MATTHEW HICKLEY

10 November 2007

When the U.S. Navy deploys a battle fleet on exercises, it takes the security of its aircraft carriers very seriously indeed.

At least a dozen warships provide a physical guard while the technical wizardry of the world's only military superpower offers an invisible shield to detect and deter any intruders.

That is the theory. Or, rather, was the theory.

American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board.

By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.

According to senior Nato officials the incident caused consternation in the U.S. Navy.

The Americans had no idea China's fast-growing submarine fleet had reached such a level of sophistication, or that it posed such a threat.

One Nato figure said the effect was "as big a shock as the Russians launching Sputnik" - a reference to the Soviet Union's first orbiting satellite in 1957 which marked the start of the space age.

The incident, which took place in the ocean between southern Japan and Taiwan, is a major embarrassment for the Pentagon.

Kitty Hawk

Battle stations: The Kitty Hawk carries 4,500 personnel

The lone Chinese vessel slipped past at least a dozen other American warships which were supposed to protect the carrier from hostile aircraft or submarines.

And the rest of the costly defensive screen, which usually includes at least two U.S. submarines, was also apparently unable to detect it.

According to the Nato source, the encounter has forced a serious re-think of American and Nato naval strategy as commanders reconsider the level of threat from potentially hostile Chinese submarines.

It also led to tense diplomatic exchanges, with shaken American diplomats demanding to know why the submarine was "shadowing" the U.S. fleet while Beijing pleaded ignorance and dismissed the affair as coincidence.

Analysts believe Beijing was sending a message to America and the West demonstrating its rapidly-growing military capability to threaten foreign powers which try to interfere in its "backyard".

The People's Liberation Army Navy's submarine fleet includes at least two nuclear-missile launching vessels.

Its 13 Song Class submarines are extremely quiet and difficult to detect when running on electric motors.

Commodore Stephen Saunders, editor of Jane's Fighting Ships, and a former Royal Navy anti-submarine specialist, said the U.S. had paid relatively little attention to this form of warfare since the end of the Cold War.

He said: "It was certainly a wake-up call for the Americans.

"It would tie in with what we see the Chinese trying to do, which appears to be to deter the Americans from interfering or operating in their backyard, particularly in relation to Taiwan."

In January China carried a successful missile test, shooting down a satellite in orbit for the first time.

How Philippines mishandled the Spratlys territorial disputes?
----------
Part 1.

The Philippine government should use a different tack in pursuing its claim on the Spratly Islands and other small territories in the South China Sea (SCS). The government posturing is beginning to sound like a broken record again by tying its response on external affairs to U.S. support even if the Philippines, a former American colony, remains far remote from Washington DC's international radar.

In the past few months, tension over the Spratlys built up with reports of incursions by China into islets in the SCS claimed by the Philippines. The incidents triggered diplomatic protests by the Philippines; the Beijing government denied the accusations. There is "freedom of navigation" in the SCS, China said, but it also called for a stop to oil exploration by other countries in the Spratlys.

Aquino officials were quick to warn that the Philippines can use its 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) with the U.S. to defend its territorial claim in the Spratlys. Modern military equipment was also to be purchased in the U.S., it was also announced. More to the point, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin asked for U.S. navy ships' deployment in the SCS to check Chinese aggression. "When the cat (U.S.) is away, the mice (China) will play," he said.

The U.S. embassy in Manila, however, stopped short of promising direct military support amid assurances that the Philippines remained a "strategic ally" and that both countries will continue "to consult and work with each other on all issues including the South China Sea and Spratlys Islands." Instead of committing specific military support to defend the Philippines' claim, the American envoy called for "restraint" in the territorial row.
