'Australian Fritzl' on incest, rape charges

An Australian man raped his daughter almost daily for 30 years and fathered her four children, in a case that echoes Austria's Fritzl incest horror, according to reports.

The revelations of the Latrobe Valley man's reign of terror have rocked Victoria, a day after the Ombudsman slammed the state's record on child protection.

The man, in his 60s, is charged with multiple counts of rape and incest in a case that echoes Austria's Fritzl incest horror.

The Age has learnt the man, who cannot be named, was initially charged with 83 offences, most of which have been withdrawn by police, but now faces 13 charges - five of incest, five of rape, two of indecently assaulting a girl under the age of 16 and one of assault. He is due to appear in a Melbourne court in November.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman would confirm only that charges had been laid against the man. She would not say what or how many they were, or when police had become involved in the case.

The accused lived with his wife, daughter and her children in a Latrobe Valley town. A News Limited paper claimed authorities had been warned of the man's activities years ago but had failed to investigate.

An ''extremely appalled'' Community Services Minister Lisa Neville said she had no knowledge of the case until today's reports and her department would immediately investigate.

''I do not know what or if there has been any involvement of the police, the department or any other agencies over that 30-year period,'' Ms Neville said.

"They are only allegations and are before the courts at the moment and we need to be very careful about how much detail we go into.

"This will be a priority to look into.''

The News Limited newspaper reports the alleged rapes started in the 1970s when the victim was about 11 and continued until 2007.

It reports all the victim's four children were born with birth defects in major Melbourne hospitals. One of the children later died.

The woman reportedly spoke to police at Morwell, in Gippsland, eastern Victoria, in 2005 after a neighbour intervened, but she declined to cooperate because she feared for her safety.

However, she went to police again in June last year and gave a statement against her father, the newspaper reports. Police conducted DNA tests on the father and, in February, laid 83 charges of sex abuse against him.

Child welfare advocates are demanding a full inquiry, with claims authorities failed to investigate the alleged abuse.

The victim's mother claims she was unaware of any abuse despite sharing a house with her daughter, husband and grandchildren until 2005.

The newspaper says the accused man's wife had denied knowing of any assaults or who fathered her daughter's children.

It quotes sources saying the case could be "every bit as bad" as that of Josef Fritzl, the Austrian man who imprisoned his daughter and fathered seven children with her.

A Canberra man has been committed to stand trial on charges of incest involving his three-year-old granddaughter.

The ACT Magistrates Court heard the 52-year-old man from Phillip faces two incest charges which allegedly occurred on January 28.

In a statement of facts presented to the court, police allege the man was asked to babysit his three-year-old granddaughter.

It is alleged the next day the girl repeatedly described oral sex involving her grandfather, telling her parents "it is our secret".

The statement claims the three-year-old later graphically described the alleged offences during a police interview.

Magistrate Lorraine Walker continued the man's bail and committed him to stand trial in the ACT Supreme Court early next month.

Father, daughter incest pair 'lived under same roof'

An ex-wife of the South Australian man who had a baby with his daughter has rubbished claims the pair had almost no contact for 30 years.

Dorothy Deaves told ninemsn John and Jenny Deaves, who have now had two babies together, lived under the same roof when Jenny was a 15-year-old girl.

John and Jenny claimed in an interview broadcast on 60 Minutes that they began a sexual relationship after Jenny tracked down the father she had never known.

But Jenny attended Dorothy and her father John's wedding reception in 1984 and stayed with them for a week, Ms Deaves claims.

The 69-year-old said Jenny stayed with them four times during their marriage, which collapsed after the father-daughter duo took a trip together to Dubbo in 2000.

Dorothy said both father and daughter broke up with their marriage partners after the Dubbo visit.

"I'm devastated — he has hurt me terribly," she said.

"It was hard to face for a long time.

"It's one of those things everyone's so upset about."

John and Jenny Deaves were found guilty last month of a single charge of performing an act of incest with the other.

Court documents show that the first child the pair conceived in 2001 died soon after being born from a congenital disease. They now have an apparently healthy nine-month-old baby girl.

The sentencing remarks show the pair were charged with two counts of incest in 2007 after police were tipped off about their relationship following an investigation by the Department for Families and Communities South Australia.

The pair were initially bailed on the condition that Mr Deaves have no contact with Ms Deaves or their child — a condition the judge said drove Mr Deaves to attempt suicide twice.

Judge Millsteed described the incestuous relationship as "unacceptable" but not one where a father “violated his daughter and used his position of authority to take advantage of her powerlessness".

The judge said he took into account the consensual nature of the relationship and the fact it didn't involve exploitation when recording a conviction.
The pair were placed on a three-year $500 good behaviour bond, with the condition they don't have a sexual relationship.
Mr Deaves told 60 Minutes sex with his daughter was "fantastic" even though he initially thought it was wrong.
"Emotions take over, as people no doubt realise, there are times during your life where emotions do rule the heart, it rules the head," he said.

"I knew it was illegal, of course I knew it was illegal but you know, so what."

The two reunited 30 years after Mr Deaves — who was once jailed for armed robbery — separated from his daughter's mother.
Ms Deaves said soon after meeting her father again, she began to see him as a man first and a father second.
"I was looking at him, sort of going, oh, he's not too bad," she said.
"Like you might look at a man across the bar at a nightclub."

South Australian police refused to comment on reports the pair were being monitored.

The British website operator and his wife allegedly abused their young son and daughter, filmed the assaults and distributed the images.
An examination of the couple's computers recovered ''chat logs'' that led US authorities this week to two fathers in Texas and Michigan. The men allegedly held internet video sessions with each other, during which they abused their children.
On Monday, when US authorities executed a search warrant on the Texas man's home, police said he admitted to assaulting his son just hours earlier during a Skype session with the Michigan man.
The Michigan man was arrested on Tuesday.
