Full story: www.nytimes.com

SYDNEY, Australia - If outlanders tend to associate Australia with kangaroos, broad-brim leather hats and an opera house, many Australians are different.

The British Commonwealth ceased to exist as anything more than a group of friendly countries when the second world war finished. The Chinese are in recession. Everybody is in recession except Australia where the economy is still growing. Why? Because we are (among other things) the best miners and processors of minerals and growers of food in the world and therefore foreigners need us more than we need them.

Facts- China's economy is still growing around 7 to 8 % this year and is not in recession. It is an adjustment for them as it is for us. We need China more than we like to admit. Fortunately Australia and China's economies are complimentary to one another.

What's happening with GM in America? Are the American people's tax dollars going to bail them out of the quicksand too?

Nope, I am American. America will get over this recession. Australia will not avoid this recession for much longer. In the long run, the Chinese Australian relationship will benefit China more than Australia. China will take the profits, while Aussies do the hard labor. Some smart people will remember that the US-Australia relationship was the better one, since we are both Anglos, it would make sense.

Its not exactly fair to compare a country of 300 million to one of 20 million that acts as a fuel depot for countries with few resources. America actually has plenty of resources, even exports food to here, but a country of 300 million relies on high tech industry and technology to prosper.
I think if America keeps its military strong it will continue to prosper. I think we need to attack another country, maybe Iran or North Korea, that would give our arms industries a big boost. I would love to see Ahmadenijad's bullet ridden body on CNN like they did for the Hussein larvae.

You should read the article in more detail, the Australian military views China as a potential threat to the country not a friend. Rudd only focuses on the economic benefits but there are other serious issues that have been overlooked. Even opposition leaders don't buy into the idea that China will be completely positive for Australia.

Great idea! You and your wingnut friends get the US to attack North Korea who would be backed by the country that now owns the US and watch the financial house of cards fall down.

China does not own the US, they have 1 Trillion Dollars worth of our cash, a bunch of other countries have large reserves. The Chinamen still need our massive market to fund their growth, they still need the West. The UK, Japan, and a few others also own large amounts of US Treasuries, we protect both Japan and the UK, and have bases on both countries. We have a 60 Trillion net worth, the national debt is 8 Trillion, if we paid that all off tomorrow we would be fine.
I am willing to bet you Europeans will find yourself in a fight with Iran in the near future. My good book predicts this event.

If you cared to read the article it was talking about China's growing influence on Australia's economy and the worries and issues that this is bringing. Not everyone in Australia is a Chinaman kissarse and some people actually take pride in their country, like Malcom Turnbull who brought up the issue of China.

Yes I thought something had a 1950s feeel about it! Its the old reds under the bed cry! You would think after 60 years that some duckheads would have given up waiting for China to overwhelm the free world! To be able to resell that crap for so long is an indication of the power of the free press and morality of "democracy"!
