My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Gordie Howe and his family for the loss of their beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. Years ago, I ran into Gordie at Chicago O'Hare airport as we both were changing planes. I could not have met a nicer gentleman. Gordie was the exact opposite of the prima donna, "don't have time for you" athlete that is so much a part of the landscape in sports today. Instead, I remember Gordie took the time to engage in conversation, and the topic had nothing to do with sports. Gordie epitomizes the word "class". Gordie, in his prime as a hockey player was a player who opponents did not want to fool around with on the ice. And he was known to engage in tough, physical play when necessary. But, off the ice from my perspective Gordie was every bit a first- class human being. He promoted the sport of hockey to fans in CT during his time with the former Hartford Whalers, an area at the time starving to have its own identity in sports - located between the major Boston and New York City metropolises.
My condolences go out to Gordie for the loss of his beloved wife.
