This guy gets it right. I nominate this guy to be on the Tribune editorial board. He's paying attention. I don't know what those morons at the Trib are doing.

Kudos for Prof. Mockaitis' foreign policy viewpoint. The current Bush admin. has used hubris & intolerance as the centerpiece of their ill advised adventures half way round the globe from America. How much security could our country have established by now for the current $1 trillion price tag in Iraq? I hope all American taxpayers will express outrage in the next election at the US resources that have been squandered on a senseless misadventure dreamt up by two sleepy armchair Cold War types (Cheney & Rumsfeld). The world has changed immensely since our last war failure in Viet Nam. At least that one was just a failure of Cold War thinking and another objectionable waste of American taxpayer dollars and great human cost on all fronts. The "domino theory" of Communist aggression was disproved by Viet Nam just as the "terrorism theory" of Iraq will turn out to be the greatest charade & PR job ever foisted on the U.S. in our proud history.

At least Putin went home to deal with the crisis. While Georgia burns, George W fiddles away in Beijing, drunk on the local Chinese brew and the trappings of power.

Just to make a small point. Milosevic of Serbia NEVER killed in Kosovo 1500 people in one day, compared to Gerogian president. He was NOT accused in Hague tribunal of genocide over Kosovo. The only way out of this mess - and many more to come - is FULL respect to the international law. Borders can and should not be changed based on US interests.

Dear Tom,
I'm Georgian living in Chicago and feel very disappointed and unprotected now. I'm in the US but my family is in Georgia, they are not safe and because of that, I'm too.
The tone of your article is absolutely right: Georgians feel that entire world left alone against current world's dangerous man - Putin. We feel that he will continue if US and Europe not stop. If Obama elected, the US will loose its positions in the world very easily. His statement about Georgia showed how inexperience he is.
Best Regards, Roin.

To Lana:
Human rights Watch--the most trusted organization in the world said today that there is not more than 200 people killed in Tskhinvali. Putin's number is absolutely incorrect, just to justify his bloody actions.
Tskhinvali is Georgian soil and will be in the future. Russia occupied it.

it is my understanding that Georgia was receiving mixed messages from the U.S.
Rice and the State Dept. were telling the Georgian President NOT to go into South O. While Cheney was telling them to go ahead with it.
We can be glad that it is Rice on the way to Georgia and not our Vice President.

Dear Roin, I completely understand what you feel. I have been in your shoes, in fact I survived a serb massacre which occured on May 1999 against the Albanian population in Kosova. I pray everyday for the good of the georgian people, and this evil action of russians to stop. I do hope that the Americans and EU will act soon. The world does not need another Bosnia, or Kosova. Although I hate comparing nations, I am certain now that russians are the same as serbs, at least they are in the same position now. Be strong! I hope your family in Georgia is fine. May God be with you!

Cause there was agreement in the end of 2007 between them about Georgia. Putin showed Bush some Saakashvili photos. Now Bush is searching another CIA puppet instead of Saakashli.

So, that is the reason to fight against Nazy-like Saakashvili criminal regime, killed 2000 Ossetinian civilians for his ambitious.

What are you guys talking about? Get down here to the level of us who don't read what you read to write this and then type bigger as we struggle with it. Point your finger and keep it there until I sound out foreign names! I can't take this anymore. I give up on foreign policy. Back to domestic issues like money and stuff. Stuff that matters more than some hard-to-say fancy schmancy Englishman posing as Georgian secret Intelligence trying to steal Russia's latest and greatest toy.

The world knows why Putin started this war. Because of his sick ambitions, he wanted revenge and has killed thousands of innocent people. This is his emotional war. Saakashvili is a smart person, he has turned his back on Russia because there's no proseprity being with it.
