This will be the smoky outcome of foolish and Pollyanaish Bush's, Rice's, Merkel's and Sarkozy's trust of Putin.

Through expansion of NATO, recognition of Kosovo, etc. we proved to Russia that we are more interested in 'friendship' with everyone else first, and Russia and its concerns can wait. Warnings such as Putin's "comrade wolf is eating and is not listening' went unheeded. The missile shield in Poland, ostensibly to ward off Iran who has not attacked any country for 250 years was just too much of an insult to Russian intelligence. And, here we are.

Russia is likely to use both our under-reaction and over-reaction to the Georgia crisis to further undercut our international standing. Steadier hands at the helm are sorely needed.

In your blind hatred of bush you conveniently forget that the previous administration (clinton) pissed off the russians even more with his incursion into Kosovo and intervention in Serbia. You must have been pricing your dot.com stock during that time. Clinton was damn lucky that didn't turn into the blood bath Iraq did because the US had absolutely no national interest in bombing serbia.
