Well argued. I especially think the cash flow after the payback period needs emphasis. There are some 50,000-plus households in Humboldt County--imagine if we could somehow retrofit each household in the County, and imagine that we could provide homeowners with utility bill savings of $300 a year on energy costs (fairly conservative), with a five-year payback (meaning the retrofits cost on average $1500). After five years that would be $15 million that was kept local rather than sent out to PG&E--every year! And that would just be the residential building stock.

You still, by law, have to be connected to the "grid", for which you pay a monthly connection fee to PG&E included in your monthly bill.

Although not part of the conventional wisdom, biotech is contributing to greener agricultural approaches. Reductions in chemical use and tillage are well-documented, despite Percy Schmeiser -type vilification of biotech. Biotech is environmentally friendly, despite it's non-traditional nature; solar panels aren't traditional either.
