Years of mediocrity? haha ok whatever man. During the 1990s the band just got bigger and bigger, they are legneds in their own right. Mediocrity does not do that. And St. Anger was a ball-out rocking record. So the sound was a bit rough but that was the point. It wasn't about slick production and predictable guitar solos, it was about the power of Metallica, the riffs, the energy, the aggression. You don't need super big production sounds, overblown guitar solos and overdubbing. Think Zeppelin, Kyuss or COC. Huge influence man, listen to the music, not the sound.

The thing about Metallica is, while people want to bash them since their 80's speed metal albums. The fact is the black album, Load, Reload & St. Anger were still better than 90% of all metal bands. They were so good & were so much better than everyone else, they had nowhere to go but down. People want to compare their new stuff to their old stuff. I liked their new stuff, obviously not as much as their 80's stuff, but I would rather have good albums from Metallica than the very best of some of the other bands. But they are the king of metal, this is the one genre that it isnt even close. Kill Em' all, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets & And Justice for All are 4 of my favorite 20 albums from music period.

well said bud and just to add over the years it aint old METALLICA or NEW METALLICA it the same METALLICA who have never been afraid to try somthing different and to be able to keep up with the times otherwise all these bashers would be sayin oh its the same old crap coming from METALLICA to but it bluntly i'd rather METALIICA still be aroun makin new albums and kicken ass at the live shows than not!
