Fascinating study and series of proposals. It would be interesting to see if they were adopted and what came to pass in the city if they were. The South Campus gateway certainly radically altered that stretch of High Street and the overall effect of renovation has been pronounced. Many of the crustier, earthier types rue the coming of clean, corporate capital but honestly I think it's probably better for the kids and the University. I look forward to further changes as well as the completion of the OSU Main Library (which although open isn't quite finished) and new Student Union. Keep going and keep growing.

I've been "hanging out" on High St. and Campus since the mid-eighties. I've noticed all of the changes around there over the years and while I miss the entertainment that used to be there, I must admit the area is much better in many ways than it once was. Because the population on Campus is temporary and transient. Most of those people couldn't care less what happens off-campus and even less about what happens after they leave. OSU needs to re-thinks it's commitment to the community, not vice-versa. THE Ohio State University is a PART of Columbus, not the other way around.

as long as you have slumlords strangling the area surrounding campus, the area surrounding campus is going to be a dump.
the plan to house all undergrads on main campus sounds somewhat whimsical if not out of touch. Most students move off campus because they and their families simply cannot afford the cost of on-campus residence halls. |
