Movie review: 'Tideland'

3 stars (out of four) 'Tideland' is a disturbing confection, a Gothic fairy tale from 'Brazil's' Terry Gilliam based on Mitch Cullin's 2000 novel about the fantasy life of a brainy, lively little Southern girl named Jeliza-Rose. Jeliza, wondrously played by 10-year-old Jodelle Ferland, is a sweet little thing living in a nightmare world. Her parents are drug addicts, and her two locales are a seedy druggie hotel that gets set afire by her rocker dad, Noah (Jeff Bridges), and later a vast Texas prairie where their only neighbors are the rattle-brained Dickens (Brendan Fletcher) and his witch-sister Dell (Janet McTeer). loved it-it really haunted me-I remember making a shrine to a dead beetle,feeding it and decorating it with flowers and shells..when I was 6or7 I love this movie,it gets under your skin...dont expect a classic masterpiece,this is more of a dream memoir,and I applaud gilliam for attempting it-critics abhor it,but I abhor critics!
