Sandy you are so right....Steve Earle is a gift from God, his music and his heart have carried a lot of us through bad, and good, times....

But, don't forget Gram Parsons...I saw him in Austin, Texas, in 1973 when I was a junior in high school, right before his death...he, too, was an inspiration for Steve Earle...and all of the "country" music today is just the same old same old to me....country died with Waylon, I think, but Steve Earle and a few others keep the better part of it still kickin....

Do the combinatorics on 12 things arranged even 12 at a time (all 12 semi-tones played at once ... a ridiculous case, but illustrative). It's 12 factorial or 479,001,600 at minimum. Now consider that there are infinite possibilities for the amount of "space" (silence) between any two voicings of those chords. The number is again infinite although some sequences will be perceived as equal if the difference is small enough. "Theres (sic) only 12 notes" is a cop out used by thieves and lazy SOBs.

Hello all... this post is really old but when watching talladega nights I heard the song I feel alright in the background (sorry to say, I don't believe I had ever heard of Steve Earle before) but I thought WOW! That sounds just like Kerosene... Of course I found out that I Feel Alright was first (duh!). After some researching on the web I found the following article, pretty surprising, and nice to know people still do give credit where it is due... check it out...

Gotta laugh at you all discussing whether or not someone ripped off portions of Earle's song.

Steve Earle RIPPED ME OFF along with hundreds of other valid ticket holders to a performance in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Earle subsequently refused to make good to all the people ripped-off.

Steve Earle is a thieving bastard - nothing less.

Man, I'm late to this discussion, but I just sumbled upon this old thread. My daughter likes Miranda Lambert so I've heard that song and always thought it sounded like Steve Earle's song. Then again, listen to Van Morrision's "Gloria" and then play "I Feel Alright"...

What was the reason for the cancellation? It sucks that you were ripped of the cash by promoters and/or Earle? The biggest rip was missing the show. I take it you won't be buying his new album "Townes" anytime soon, eh?

Actually Miranda gives Steve full cowriter credit, she says its due to listening to so much of him and it just coming out in her own writing.. Mirandas Mother also baby sat Earles kids so Miranda does have a close relationship with him . I consider them both in my top artists ever ....

Yet another young country artist is ripping Country Rocker Steve Earle.
If you listen to Miranda Lamberts latest single out on the air "Kerosene," it sounds a lot like Steve's "Feel Alright."
She uses some of the same phrases and it's even in Steves style. Does anyone know if she asked to do this or does she have the right to do this? I've been listening to Steve Earle for more than 18 years - and just hate to see another snot nosed brat break into the music scene while ripping off another artist...and of course no one mentions it on the air - nothing! New country - for the most part -sucks anyways - but this takes the cake. Anyone care to comment? I'd love to hear anyones thought on this .
Peace - Nick

As a Marxist, why should Earle care if anyone "rips him off"? There's no such thing as private property!

That woman is thieving Steve Earl again ! Lightning has struck twice "UNBELIEVABLE"... Not only did Miranda Lambert redo Ear's "I Feel Alright" with her copycat song called "kerosene", she is at it yet again with her latest Steve Earl smash and grab called "the house that built me". Earl built that house a long time ago sweetie and called it "GoodBye". Listen to both tunes for yourself and tell if you think Miranda is a repeat offender.

Steve's a nice guy in spite of his faults. As I'm sure Miranda Lambert is probably a great girl in spite of hers. And I'm sorry to inform you,the only original songs come from the blues. Everything ever since is a rip off. So if Miss Lambert had to give credit to Steve Earle as a songwriter, then Steve should do the same for Jagger-Richards,even though they don't need it. Or care.
I never saw "Jumpin' jack Flash" and "Amerika 6.0" as anything alike at all. And,yeah, Steve did wreck marriages, but they were probably his, I don't think, but I could be wrong, that he went out trolling like Ms. Lambert. That aside, there is probably no real answer to this, I've been a Steve Earle fan for a hundred years, we grew up about 50 miles from each other in Texas, are aboutthe same vintage, and he has encouraged me, personally and with his music, to maintain my 3 year sobriety. For me, his music went a long way in saving my life three years ago, I guess I can forgive him for pretty much anything....

Miranda ripping off a (barely) one hit wonder from three decades ago! Yeah, that's something she needs to do. She's destined for the kind of fame only the like of Loretta Lynn experience. Earle a nobody who hasn't made a single contribution to country music.

Exactly. I can't believe you're the only person in this thread to mention it. It's not plagiarism when you give credit and pay royalties. It's no more of a "ripoff" than any other cover song.

Um, actually she readily admits that she did so, which is why she gives Earle credit. Also, SE is far from being a "one hit wonder". If you knew country music history half as well as Miranda apparently does you'd know this.

I got my first taste of Steve Earle recently, "Copperhead Road"; all I can say is, I want more.

I've checked out more of his music and really like it, and really really like that celtic folk rock sound he has in some of his tunes, particularly in copperhead road.

Are there any other bands taking that style and running with it? I would really like to see a genre be born from Steve Earle's style.

Thanks for the music Mr. Earle.

Steve Earle has "wrecked more marriages" I am assuming you mean his own, not those of others. Miranda's "ripoff" is blatant, I don't see how you are asserting Steve Earle has ripped off anyone. He doesn't need to do that. Real talent will out the flash in the pan stuff of folks like Lambert who, I don't imagine, will be around in another 25 years. Nice try.

One hit wonder? Look again, Pedro. Steve Earle has given more to the music in this country, in his generation, than shiny little girls like Miranda Lambert ever will hope to give. Real, hard, true songwriting that has endured and grown and become a part of what is best of music. Always.

Are you still so bitter after 2 or 3 yrs? I am sorry that things didn't work out for you to see Steve during that tour. I saw him twice. He's never given less than $5000 worth of music for a $30 ticket, never in the 20 plus yrs I've been proud to call him my hero. Sorry for your loss.

If you must know anybodys music can be re released without permission of the original writer after it has been comercially released.
Fill out the forms
pay the statutory rate and let her rip
go to Harry fox agency for forms
and pay
the writer receives the royalties for mechanical and airplay
I'm sure steve made a killing on his 50%
somwhere between 500k and 700k
go figure
