The only ones that are washed up are the sorry generation that Luke and you,(probably), belong to. Original thought and talent is something that the Generation ME never will have. Please stay north.

Well, I saw Steely Dan last night in Mountain View and I and the 19,999 other people there thought they looked alive and well. If being washed up means 45 sold-out concerts, each of which is getting excellent reviews, I'll take it.

It saddens me to think that the older generation thinks this generation is washed up. I could sit here and list mistakes the previous generations have made. Your mistakes are ones my generation has to live though, and the mistakes my generation make are ones the future generations will have to do the same.
I want to lash out at such a small ordeal that prolly 90% of the people who see the movie "you, me, and dupree" would not have made the correlation between that name and the song. That is how far time and music has progressed. Live in the past if you want, but bringing up the past to fuel your own ego is just a sorry attempt of reviving a career.

I'm in the older gen, and I love yours (I have 4 children in it, and they're all amazing, every one of them). Don't let one curmudgeon from my time make you think we're all that-a way. I agree that my gen made many mistakes, but Steely Dan ain't one of them. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the million people seeing them on this current tour certainly don't think so either.

Obviously you know nothing about Steely Dan's history or music. Steely Dan and their fans do not live in the past and they are not "reviving" a career. Steely Dan is as relevant in 2006 as they were in 1976 and are no oldies act having produced two new Steely Dan and 1 Donald Fagen albums since 2006. This summer is their 3rd tour since 2000 and they have no problem selling out their shows. Steely Dan does not have to "fuel" an ego, they have been mostly reclusive throughout their career. And FYI the Cousin Dupree song was from 2000, not the "past" and the album it was on won the Grammy that year for best album. Instead of reading news reports about what they said about that movie and forming a opinion from a short excerpt why don't you go to the Steely Dan website and read the entire letter they wrote and you can see it was said tongue in cheek. You should only hope the music/artist you listen to today will still be relevant in 20 years which I doubt. If it wasn't for music videos and internet, etc most musicians wouldn't make it today. Majority of music today is fluffy pop, teenage angst, rap. I don't know how old you are but you probably don't even like the same bands you liked 5-10 years ago or probably not even around anymore. While there have been decent bands out there the past 10-15 years where are most of them now? most have faded away. A lot of today's artists can sell a lot of cd's but they can't sell out too many concerts. A true test of a band or artist is their live shows. If you follow the music industry you will see that the majority of top concert draws are from the bands that have been around a long time.

Spoken like someone who is truly ignorant of their music. Will the groups you listen to still be around 30 years from now - or even 3 years from now? Donald Fagan and Walter Becker are two of the most creative talents in the history of modern music.

Thank you, Jeff...can't wait to see in 20 years what will be the lasting influence of Brittney Spears, Green Day (30 years ago the Ramones already did what they're doing) & other hacks (Macy Gray?! sing as tho you're constantly about to hack up part of a lung, & somebody thinks she's got "soul").

If you know ANYTHING about Fagen and Becker is that they don't take themselves very seriously (except when they are playing their un-matched music) The letter was obviously a sardonic attempt at humor, which, if you have every listened to their lyrics, is part of their style. NO ONE writes a better tune about incest than the dan. Musically 95% of the other bands and artists out there couldn't hold the Dan's jock strap when it comes to talent or musical prowess. Can't wait to see them in Tahoe under the stars in AUG. STEELY DAN IS THE BEST BAR NONE

I once had a professional musician tell me that Steely Dan was rock for people that think.
