No regrets for Sinead O'Connor 15 years after ripping up pope's picture

Full story: The Canadian Press

There is a place for (organized religion) but in our times it's important to understand ... that God and religion are two very different things. The difference between them is that God is unconditionally loving and religion is conditionally loving. - It was a moment that would ignite a global firestorm and brand her an industry and religious pariah, but 15 years after Sinead O'Connor ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II on live television, the Irish iconoclast says she has no regrets. In fact, on this month's anniversary of that fateful act, O'Connor muses on what would happen if anyone ripped up an image of Pope Benedict XVI, the controversial leader who took John Paul's place. "I don't think this pope is as beloved as the last one," O'Connor concludes diplomatically of the current pontiff, a hardline traditionalist. Read more

This was an action done to get attention to the
abuse that was going on in the catholic church.
Sinead did this along time before it was public knowledge that some preists were abusing children and paying no penalty. The church was covering
up. With waht has transpired in the last few years, I say sinead is owed a big big apology. It is a valuable lesson for all of us. Sinead is a victim of child sexual abuse.

Yes, "she did it because the catholic church allowed the english to take ireland. And the popes helped to keep the irish down" as a Historian I can agree with the comment from Hayward, CA.

An I too am a Catholic born and Raise, Plus Irish who's family came from both County Donegal & County Dublin, and now reside in Philadelphia, PA. America's birth place and such a young country noted by the second set of founding fathers the first was the Native American's who where here first and where happy until the Red-holocaust the which was started by a man who has a national country holiday...WHY?

"Who was Christopher Columbus? Every schoolboy knows, he discovered America. But in reality America had been discovered by Native Americans thousands of years before. What would Spaniards of the sixteenth century have said, had Native Americans landed at Spain's shores and proclaimed to have discovered Europe?

Who knows that Columbus, prior to his career as a sailor, had been a slave trader by profession who would become a holy crusader and personally responsible for the killing of about half a million Natives and that it was already Columbus who introduced those measures generally attributed to later conquistadors, such as enslaving Indians and hunting them down with dogs?"

The Genicide of Native americans, so how great is it being a Historian after all?

Was it just the Spanish only responsible killing 'Native Americans'? "The Founding Fathers' of America, aren't you being a bit of a hypocrite. All America springs forth from the loins of the Philadelphia 'Fathers' how arrogant, and a little sexist amongst other things.

It's a big joke that Ireland is Catholic. The Celtic Christian Church was enormously successful, and a closer link to the original Christian church started by Jesus. The Roman Catholic Church killed many, many celts from Dublin to Istanbul because they refused to recognize the Pope. The Celtic Christian Church was the reason why Ireland went from being a savage land to being one of the best educated and most righteous cultures in Western Civilization. Being Roman Catholic has done nothing but bring hardship on these people and has really robbed them and should be treated like an enemy of the people of Ireland.

I love Sinéad.

As a comment on saying that the pope was a wrong target for the criticism considering child abuse I'd like to make a point:
The pope is a strong symbol of Catholicism and ripping his photo was a symbolic act. The criticism was aimed at the Catholic church.

The 1st post asserts that Sinead is a victim of child sexual abuse. As I understand it, she did live in a home after her family broke up & before her father remarried. Is there any claim/proof that she was abused, &, if so, where? If she had knowledge, especially 1st hand, of abuse in a church run institution, that would make her actions on SNL more understandable, albeit her later apology to JP II less so.

I have no respect for theses so-called artists who "to get attention" keep on vilifying the christian religion, pedophiles did infiltrate the church, the clergy did not handle it at all well, but I never see these same "artists" displaying any support to the legions of abuse victims at the hands of the Islamic Mullahs, starting with the most Famous Pedophile of all ...Muhammad, his second "wife" was a child of six years old, however, it is said that he restrained himself to not have sex with her until she was nine, his third "wife' was thirteen... any victims today, who are brave/ foolish enough to report current abuse to the Police have to be taken into protective custody (in western countries) the reason these "Artists" do not speak out for these victims is obvious,'(1)they are too cunning ,(2) they are too "gutless".

It is the small minded catholics like you who defend to the bitter end the systematic physical, sexual, and psycholigical abuse of tens of thousands of Irish children who are "gutless"
Sinead O'Connor highlighted the abuse of power of the Catholic church when others, like yourself, didn't have the guts to ctiticise the priests, or indeed the organization (now led by a former Nazi).
It beggars belief that you would attempt to justify the crimes of the catholic church by muddying the waters regarding the activities of a phrophet who died over a millenia ago.
Perhaps you should read the Ryan report, or the Ferns report, or the testamonies of the victims of church abuse to the redress tribunal before you launch such a stout defence of these criminals, but then again I suppose you think that Hitler was just misunderstood as
well

Ian ! You still here? like a bad smell still hanging around ,peddling your Anti-White hatred and using the old "Hitler" thing to brand any white person who takes any pride in his race, moreover, I don't need to read any "F%*#7n" Ryan or Ferns reports ,having experienced first hand the Physical abuse of attending no less than five different Catholic schools including boarding school, we all got beaten "black and blue" for the slightest thing, even for getting low marks, in the weekly tests we got "6 of the best" for each and every subject, No, I don't defend those "monsters", and I don't defend the "Monsters" of the Nazi Gestapo. either, but I don't blame the young kids in the Hitler Youth movement ,in those days (your with us or against us)for the crimes of the Nazi Politicians, and I don't blame the good priests and there are many. for the crimes of those "Monsters" who abused the children, the two above mentioned situations were easy pickings for "Monsters"to wear a uniform and set out to seek their prey. Remember this, It was more than 95% white people who destroyed the Nazis and 100% Catholics who are taking the criminal abusers in the priesthood to justice. I note that you polity refer to the "activities" of the prophet,(abuse is abuse) when ever it is committed, I still think it is a cowardly and cheap trick to tear up a picture of the pope, knowing full well that a 'fatwa' is not imminent, and have to hide for your life in fear of a misguided Muslim fanatic, seeking a "backdoor into heaven where he can have sex with 72 virgins.

You're full of empathy and affection today, so it would be a shame not to spread it around. It's a marvellous day for a low-key get-together with some of the people you haven't seen during the past few days, because you'll enjoy having a good chat about what's been happening. Once your social duties are out of the way you'll love curling up on the sofa with a good book or a favourite film.
