I think I have figured out what I'm going to do with all the things my dad had in this trunk, I'm going to create a Vet Memorial in my home I have this alcove and going to put up his medals in a display case I'm having built esp for them. I have having trouble getting those reports you mentioned seems alot of what he was doing in RVN is still Classified Because my requests are being rejected. From what I can find out, he was on several rescue missions into North Viet Nam for POW's I went to the VA to get information and they said his 201 file was Marked as Classfied do you have any other suggestions? I think I'm pretty much at a dead end right now.
Glad to hear that all is well and your looking at doing that tribute.Hope you had a great Christmas. Don't concern yourself with the VA records still showing classified, they are quite often way behind. There are much better ways to get the very exact info or to determine "for sure" if the history of certain events is still classified. Also, even if the release of that certain event info is possibly still classified, that does not mean it can't be discussed by vets or anyone for that matter, it only would mean that the US DOD will not verify it. I still doubt that anything from then is still classified, as alot of "very sensitive" information has been out for years and in some cases decades, including most of MacVSog's history of operations in Nam and the surrounding countries. I have a few websites you can go to to get "freedom of information act" foia info, on just about anything pretaining to your father, MacVSog, his other units, just about anything. You can even get his "total" service records, replacement citations or medals. One site is the DOD, Dept of Defense, kinda an overall foia site as some of your dad's exploits very possibly were with other branches of the service, not just the Army. Another site is the archives site for military records. And the last one is the CIA foia site for anything they have on him. And that site may be one of the best as the cia was in on anything MacVSog did, and ran alot of the classified stuff in SE Asia, including the rescue mission attempts and recons. Another, I think interesting route would be to research his Nam buddies that may still be around, look them up, converse with them on the history of the missions, relationships etc etc. That may be the most interesting of all the information. I have always felt, that personal touch to those events is something we shouldn't waste because of the passing of time and loss of these heroes. The 3 websites are.
www.dod.mil/pubs/foi/ www.archives.gov/st-louis/index.html www.foia.cia.gov Good luck on the sites, and let me know if you want to on any progress. Again, it's a great thing your doing for your dad, you have every reason in the world to be proud. When he eventually sees it, he may shed some tears, but the respect it stands for goes much further.
