I would encourage the File family to test their home for formaldehyde. The Sierra Club used passive ACS badges that cost $39 including lab analysis. Testing is simple and straight forward. Test the daughter's room that has recovered from leukemia.
The California Air Resources Board's report published December 15, 2009 states: "Nearly all homes (98%) had formaldehyde concentrations that exceeded guidelines for cancer and chronic irritation..." Summary: http://www.arb.ca.gov/research/apr/past/04-31... Report: http://www.arb.ca.gov/research/apr/past/04-31... Researcher's PowerPoint: http://iee-sf.com/resources/pdf/ResidentialVe... Just this week China released a report claiming that 2.2 million children die every year from indoor air pollution. Formaldehyde is listed as a major source of chemical contamination. The State of California Office of Environment Health Hazard Assessments recommends not exceeding 7 ppb. Studies show decreased lung function in children at 30 ppb, and increased asthma at 50 ppb. The 100 ppb concentration is an occupational limit that was developed assuming 8-hours/day; 5-days/week; only healthy adults. Children are more sensitive and spend more time in their home. Formaldehyde can be especially elevated in homes with double pane windows, fiberglass wall insulation, lots of wooden furniture. Mositure and heat both elevate formaldehyde as well as wall with sun exposure. If testing indicates a problem the solution includes opening windows, removing sources, sealing any unsealed pressboard (common on back of dressers, desks, nightstands, and bottoms of drawers). Fortunately, resolving the issue once identified is fairly straight forward. |
