I was in the Japan aboard the USS Independence, 18 years old. We got the news late, the Commanding officer put it out on the 1MC. Just about the entire ship was 25 and below. The Crew ship's company about 3200. All the people not on duty went drinking that night. You could hear songs from Nevermind and the other CDs blaring out of evey bar on the Honcho District that night and there was over 50 there. Sailors were just falling in the street drunk and it was like wake. Three days later there was a big brawl involving a huge Japanese wedding party and a bunch of drunking sailors. Close to 300 people all together. The Boston Globe went as far as to call it a riot. I can't find the stroy any longer from globe but it happened and it was because of Kurt.
