Sounds as though soon-to-be Grandma Palin might be planning a shotgun wedding for her pregnant daughter -- an all-too-typical (even stereotypical) response by this gun-toting mama. Must be a proud moment for McCain and the NRA.

While I fully support the girl's right to have the baby or abort it, to marry the father or not, this throws both McCain and Palin in a terrible light. The one for being so easily blindsided, the other for letting her 16 year old daughter be subject to gossip all over the world. Even if I approved of their policies, which I don't for a moment do, this team has already shown itself unfit to govern. Either oe would be putty i Putin's hands during a negotiation.

John McCain made a terrible choice in choosing Governor Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate! Prior to becoming Governor of Alaska (which she has held for only 1 1/2 years so far) she was the mayor of the small Alaskan town of Wasilla. She doesn't have enough experience to be V.P. of the United States! Ms. Palin claims to be "Pro-life" but supports the aerial hunting of wolves and wants to take the polar bear off the endangered species list (so that it can be hunted) since she says that it's getting in the way of more oil drilling. Can we say hypocrite??? She's from a region of natural beauty and wildlife but cares more about oil and money than about Alaska's animals and environment. If John McCain is elected U.S. President, Ms. Palin would be one heartbeat (if not less given McCain's age) away from being President of the most powerful country in the world. Imagine what she could do to our country's wildlife and environment. Please don't vote for Sarah Palin! We don't need another selfish, greedy and inexperienced politician in the White House for another 4 years!! Vote for Obama/Biden!!

Sounds like republican led "abstinence only" program really works! Brings out the hypocrisy every time. And now the 17 year old girl will marry the father; we don't know how old is he, do we? Don't republicans know that shotgun weddings are passe? If this isn't a mockery of marriage, I don't what is. Children marrying children...

Here's the really big kicker. When Sarah Palin went into "labor" with her last last child, she was in Dallas, Texas at some sort of convention. She was dead set on giving a speech. Well, that is all nice and good, but her water broke while she was there. Instead of foregoing the speech, she went ahead and did it. While she was still supposedly in labor, she took a flight from Dallas to Seattle. You would think that with having her water break, being more suspectible to infection, and dealing with a high risk pregnancy and knowing that her baby has Down's Syndrome, that she would stop by any number of Seattle area hospitals. No sir, that did not happen. She hopped on another 4 hour plane trip to Anchorage, while still in labor. When arriving in Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska, there were hospitals within 15 minutes of the airport that she could have gone to, but she did not do this. She drove over an hour, mind you, in labor, to Wasilla, AK and delivered her baby in a facility that does not handle "high risk births" and does not even have a pre-natal facility. Ms. Palin is hiding something. That last baby she had is not her's. No airline would allow her on a plane while she was in labor. For that matter, no airline would have allowed her to fly from Anchorage to Dallas while she was 36 weeks pregnant and a high risk pregnancy to boot. This woman thinks she has all of us snowed, but I have been reading up the papers in Alaska on this. People in Alaska may be fooled, but the rest of the US is not.

She's not into reality. I don't want somebody in there that's going to bury their head in the sand and HOPE their foolish beliefs will top reality. It's like wanting to close all the police stations and saying we should just abstain from crime. Duhh?

This is more about the GOP snottyness on the issue. It's OK for a pretty white suburban young woman to have a out of wedlock child, but not for a poor white, black, or hispanic person to have an out of wedlock child.

This woman thinks she has all of us snowed, but I have been reading up the papers in Alaska on this. People in Alaska may be fooled, but the rest of the US is not. I agree that the whole sequence of events seems preposterously unlikely. I've heard a great deal of speculation about this, and the (as yet not proven) allegation that the baby was really her daughter's, and this was how the family handled the underage girl having a baby out of wedlock (she would have been too young to marry at that time.) If it was a cover-up, it was a doosey... and the truth will come to light over the next two months. But judging by the full-throated "hurrah" from the GOP, I suspect that Palin's obvious vulnerabilities... i.e.: zero foreign policy experience, radical-right stances on abortion, sex education, and the environment... pale in comparison (pun intended) to the incongruity of being an "abstinence only" advocate who can't even keep her teenage daughter from getting knocked-up before she's 18. If Mrs. Palin exhibits this lack of control over her own kids, then what do you think she'd do if she suddenly found herself President? That's the real concern. McCain may look robust, but he was born the year that Adolph Hitler presided over the Olympic Games in Berlin. The total of federal spending the year John McCain was born was 8.23 billion dollars.(this year, it's in excess of $700 billion.) A first-class postage stamp cost three cents. The most popular car on the road was the Model-A Ford (1927 re-engineered edition) which cost $385.(That's not 385 a month, kids... that was the total cost.) It was the year that Roosevelt was elected to a second term. McCain may appear 'robust," but the truth is, he's already seven years past what the government declares to be "retirement age," and he's just one bad serving of salmonella-tainted spinach away from permanent retirement, which--if he were elected--would mean Sarah Palin being rocketed to the most powerful office in the world. Just say NO! With so very many other people better qualified than she will EVER be, putting her in that position would be as irresponsible for voters as it was for John McCain to pick her for Veep in the first place.

What, she found the baby in a trash container at the airport? By the way, according to reports she barely looked pregnant. If you want to go after her, an she's go a huge number of targets on her back, go after real stuff instead of internet blather. Her position on abstinance only sex education and wanting to teach creationalism in public schools might be good starters. Fiction makes posters look foolish.

To me, the daughter's pregnancy just underscores the present administration's ridiculous abstinence-only approach to sex education. I guess if you don't talk about it, it won't happen, not between our young people (whose hormones are raging at that age). HA! Worse still, that means that the only education our kids are getting is picked up from friends and on the street, not the kind of information we should be responsibly providing.

Side note: Many are fretting what would have happened if Bristol got an abortion instead. You'd never have found out about it! I'm sure there are plenty of pro-lifers who have that skeleton in their family closet. That would be hypocrisy, but no one would know.

What gets me about this entire fiasco is that the religious wingnuts are hailing this child and, as far as I'm concerned, failed mother as heroes because the child is getting married and keeping the child.(And the future baby daddy is 18 by news reports.)
Where's the outrage that the child is 1) having a child before she turns 18; and 2) that she had pre-marital sex? They want to put these two on pedestals because they're not aborting the baby (and I'm pro-CHOICE, not pro-abortion), but what does this say about the Palins' success as parents. Their daughter has at least once broken one of the basic tennents that her family, their religion, and their political party want to enforce on the entire nation...

This says more about the success of abstinence-only education than it does about the Palin's parenting skills.[Of course, what they teach their children--or don't--is part of parenting.]

It is a shame the the relegious right wing can hold this child up and praise he for doing the righ thing by not aborting the child and for her future plans on marrage for her and the father. Not once in their rightious rant did the mention the sin of pre martial sex. What hypocrites. Looks like what mom believes in about abstinence before marrage didn't fly in her own home.

Assuming that pre-marital sex is a sin, the sin can be forgiven. I find nothing hypocritical about assessing the current circumstances and putting your best foot forward. And yet the Palin supporters fail to learn anything new: They continue their denial. Abstinence-only education does not work, and contraceptives are important tools in family planning. I can't believe we're even having this debate in the 21'rst century. I grew up thinking that the Pope was the only man left on earth who believed contraception was evil. You don't find many "good Catholic families" with a dozen kids anymore.

"Hi, we're from the Republican Party! We're here to tell you who you can marry, and that's IF we even decide you're worthy of the right to marry! We're also going to tell you what you can do in your own bedroom with another consenting adult, and whether or not you can have children and what qualifies as a 'family' for you! However, don't you DARE say a word about what we do in our bedrooms, or say what qualifies as a family for us, or even talk about it! Its gay parenting that is truly illegitimate, not out-of-wedlock heterosexual pregnancies or shotgun weddings for our children. That's just none of your business and its offensive to us that you report about it!" If the U.S. elects this cabal of hypocrites and idiots yet again, then it deserves whatever it gets. Excuse me while I go vomit.
