At Harvard Law School in 1990, President Obama found himself lovingly mocked by his peers for relentlessly promoting the exotic story of a search for racial identity that later became the theme of his best-selling book,“Dreams From My Father.”

“My mother was a backup singer for Abba. They were good folks,” a student parody of Mr. Obama joked. In Chicago,“I discovered I was black, and I have remained so ever since.”

A presidential election victory 18 years later ushered Mr. Obama into the White House. But it also drew new attention to the stories he told in the book, written years before his presidential campaign. And as he runs for office again, there are new questions about how closely the president’s telling of his life hews to reality.

A new book by David Maraniss of The Washington Post claims to document the many ways — some very small, a few large — in which Mr. Obama’s youthfully constructed narrative appears to be contradicted by the people and events in his life.

And the book, available Tuesday, follows reporting in The New York Times and elsewhere over the past half-dozen years that has sometimes called into question parts of Mr. Obama’s life story.

The president’s memoir has long been the foundation of Mr. Obama’s political biography. In 2008, it was one of two books that delivered a defining and searing narrative around which the men running for president built their political brands.

“Dreams From My Father” portrayed Mr. Obama as a mixed-race young man raised without a father and struggling to find his racial identity. In “Faith of My Fathers,” John McCain was a brash young soldier struggling to live up to his father, becoming a hero along the way.

Mr. Obama’s memoir — written at a time that the young man contemplated a career as an author — later became a hit among Mr. Obama’s political groupies, who sometimes arrived at campaign events in 2008 clutching copies.

I have not problem with him paying no taxes if he used the tax loopholes. Hey, we all use what is available. The problem is that we need a flat tax that taxes everyone, no matter what level of income. Get rid of all tax deductions and tax credits. But, no one should have to pay more that 35% of their income in taxes.
