What the bible says is not relevant in legal matters. However, I'm infuriated at the arguments that the death penalty is gods will. For your information, and this actually is fact, the bible was written by a man, interpreted by a man, and it's been retranslated and edited many times to cater to the current ruler in the last few hundred years. Even if it was originally the word of god it's most certainly not now.
I'm not sure I'd even read it for entertainment purposes. The story is full of holes and contradicts itself multiple times. It caters to anyone if they read into it correctly.
Given that I was religious at a younger age I have read the thing. If you were such a good Christian you would know that to be taken to heaven you have to accept jesus Christ as your savior. No gray area, you believe in the man and youre in. I also happened on scripture that states explicitly that all sins are the same in the eyes of god. That means killing is just as bad as lying. So we should either use the death penalty for all crimes or, if you really believe this let god be the judge in the end.
It's amazing that the ones who claim to preach love and forgiveness can also preach hate and punishment in the same breath. Sometimes I think Christians use god as a way to invade lives and cause more pain and suffering than necessary
