The Phelps Family Protests The Obama Girls

The Obamas have done their best to keep their daughters out of the political limelight, to ensure that they have as normal as possible of a childhood. This morning the Phelps family decided to protest outside of Sidwell Friends, the school attended by Sasha and Malia Obama. One of the protesters posted this picture on twitter. Tomorrow they plan on protesting lower Sidwell where Malia matriculates. They stood across the street and held their signs up. The school did nothing to stop them. The Phelps family of the Westboro Baptist church have become famous by protesting at military funerals. They believe that the wars that the US is engaged in, and the terrorist attacks of 9/11, are a punishment by God for the tolerance of homosexuality, which they view as sin. They even went as far as to protest the funeral of Matthew Sheppard who was murdered for being gay. They are staunchly anti-gay, anti-abortion and anti-Obama. The Phelps family intend to picket the Fort Hood memorial services this Tuesday. They carry posters saying things like thank God for 9/11. To say that the Phelps family is a manifestation of evil and intolerance is an understatement.

Yet another homage to the media whores that are the Phelps Family Freak Show of Hate but with the bonus of a proposal to try to silence them as "hate speech", they really ought to love that. I particularly loved the line about the school did nothing to stop them. What were they going to do, call the police? It wasn't illegal. Shoot them down in the street? Sidwell is a Quaker school, so that wasn't about to happen, So what exactly were they supposed to do to stop it. Ah yes, "hate speech" laws. Brilliant idea, not. Who gets to decide what is acceptable and what is unacceptable and do we really want anyone to have that power?

i think it would be so funny if while they were off protesting in D.C. a freak "earthquake" would hit right where their building/house is. Weird how we can't explain it, must be a miracle or something.

I have never heard them speak about love once: ever. Westboro Baptists would have to be the worst of the worst in christianity and lets face there plenty out to pick from. Having seen and heard of them in action of the years it appears there is only one sin: homosexuality. An act where two men actually love each other. The Phelps appear to be the most sexually repressed family on earth. They're still trying to figure out where their own children come from. I'm sure there are psychiatric reasons for their bad behaviour and intolerance. I just wish they'd get some help, may be a good dose of Thorazine.

From what I have read Fred used to beat his kids mercilessly and a couple of his kids have disavowed him and have come out against him.
It is cult pure and simple. The cult leader controls every movment of the culitists and it is often rule by tyranny and severe punishment. All we can do is hope Fred has a quick exit.

Sweet, I love these guys. Everywhere they show up, they bring attention to the intolerance that already exists. I'm glad they're protected by our 1st Amendment rights, so they can continue putting their hateful message in everyone's faces. Everyone who calls themselves a decent person should be forced to see the extremism that they unwittingly ally themselves with. The Phelps' and the WBC provide a necessary service by giving a face to the hatred and discrimination that lurks in the hearts of so many otherwise "good" people. If the Phelps' didn't exist, I'd suggest someone go out and POE up a similar group. Their continued exposure makes it harder and harder for the intolerant to stay hidden (as they're trying to do here in Washington State).
