Lars Ulrich sucks dicks for cab fare, then walks home.

During the first few albums, Lars' style on the drums was very fast and aggressive for its time. He's not only the co-founder of the band, he does a lot of behind the scenes management for the band including set list and deals with the business side of Metallica in the music industry. Also, he's an ass.
As a drummer, there are many who would probably sound better, but he has a unique presence that a lot of drummers don't have and the band would probably crumble without him.
Lulu was just a terrible idea though. I mean if they were going to do that, they could have teamed up with Lemmy Kilmister, King Diamond, Dave Mustaine, or a range of musicians more talented and interesting than Lou Reed.
