You need to be careful where you source your data from. Wikipedia has a lot of un-cited fact. This can't be used as fact.

You also have to consider the span of Michael’s career though. Elvis was around when music was young and there wasn't much else to entertain so yes sales will be better then. Just as were the Jackson 5. All factors have good to be considered when comparing. Look at sales today for music, it's a fraction of what used to sell.

1. Because music is so widely available nowadays and accessible via all types of media - hence the reduced need to buy them
2. Piracy- This has a lot to do with declining sales
3. There are so many other forms of entertaining proceeding music. Playstations, Xboxes, mobile phones. These weren't around back in the days of Elvis so all focus was on music.
4. Soundtracks - Thy always do fantastic if the movie is a success.

Look at
Celine - My heart will go on -Titanic.
Berlin take my breath away from Top Gun, the song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 13, 1986 and became number 1 in the UK for four weeks in November 1986

They all become successes and were all from soundtracks and more than likely wouldn't have been AS popular if they didn't have the boost the movie gave them.

All of the above (excluding their personal lives) have played it safe. Where as Madonna has done some very controversial stuff yet still is as famous and has not been defeated. She has upset 1,000's just for not restricting herself and doing what she believes in. Yet 24years later she still sells out a 50+date tour with ticket prices @£160 each!

This is where Madonna excels this is why Madonna has beaten the odds. Also look at her energy her fitness for a woman of her age. Despite what people say about her looks Madonna still is a beautiful woman.

You can't deny her great success. She could play it safe like other squeaky clean artists and be even more popular and successful but she doesn't do music for popularity. She likes to get messages out and make change. Squeaky clean artists have nothing to say and don't make a difference. The only differences they make are in the music industries stats.

I agree. Technically, Whitney shouldn't be here. Elton shouldn't be mentioned. He's sad. And although Elvis has the numbers (although, officially not by much) Madonna and Michael are the most famous people ever to live.

Yes! I agree. Madonna should actually be the most respected out of all of these artists because she has beaten the odds more than any other. She has pushed the envelope time and time again, and is not afraid to do it again and again and probably will carry on doing this.

Madonna has more odds against her than any other artist on earth.

-A lot of women were jealous of her, and there are some that still are.
-A lot of men were intimidated by her, for good reason too.
- The record companies shuddered at first, but found out that she actually caught on.
- She was too overpowering for most.
- She is full of it, and full of herself (she has every right to be), people didn't like that.
- She was seen by many as grotesque.
- She was condemned for her religious bashings.
- Condemned for her sexuality.
- Condemned for the topics she chose to cross.
- Condemned for her attitude towards the pathetic Hollywood life.
- And basically, people didn't like her because she woke everyone up and made people realise that the world is actually a lot scarier than they made it out to be, and that made people turn away.

Despite all of this, she has managed to still outsell anyone of these young, supposedly more beautiful (although I don't see it) women, and still kick their asses.

She has more guts, will, energy and drive to succeed than any other women in the music industry, ever.

If she had lived in earlier times, she would've been burnt right there and then.

She has beaten all of these odds, and still carries on and on. Kneel, bitches. She's the damn queen!

And Madonna has grown up in front of our eyes. So we see this vulnerable woman unfolding before our eyes. No modern female artist has been able to match that. I love Whitney. madonna has had a bigger impact i will addmit but many stars from beyonce, mariah carey, christina aguilera, mary j blige, toni braxton, jennifer hudson and many more have said that whitney is one of their bigest influences and madonna had a bigger impact in the 80's but 90's, whitney was like a blue star in the sky that couldnt be touched and the only reason why mariah was more successful because she was fresh and new. the bodyguard becoming the second best selling female album in america and the best selling female album worldwide and she had the most successful female single ever too. madonna has said in a interview on youtube that when whitney singe ''exhale soot shoot '' did number one, she said she feared whitney, i dont know if its still on there or not. whitney has had a huge impact and she is just as respected as much as madonna at least in America. but michael jackson has had the biggest influence in music ever. i mean he is the best slling music solo artist. and he has the best selling album. michael impact is much bigger than madonna and elvis. i mean think of the inspiration. look at how many new artist say michael is their influence. but we need to look at two of the biggest lengends ever in my eyes........ james brown and tina turner. if it wasnt for them their would be elvis, michael, beyonce, janet, diana ross, aretha franklin, the rolling stones, and many many more. tina has sold more tickets then any other woman and she is known to be the best female performer ever. same can be said for james brown.
