having been there four times since thequake, I can assure you that they are not wailing or waiting for help. They build homes out of trash and immediately set to work to try to make a living and survive. They are a hard working, reverent and friendly people and are ver used to raking care of themselves the best they can. Why don't you go down there and see for yourself? You would learn a lot about life in a world you have never experienced.

Why is the world so cynical? Why can't the people in need do something for themselves and go to another destination? No money? Walk. If our ancestors were capable in surviving with no technology then I don't see the problem. We cannot afford to wait for money to fall out of the sky if you are in that much need.

With little else to entertain themselves, it's easy to see why they have so many children. That however is one of the major problems. Till they cut way back on the birth rate they don't have any chance of ever getting ahead.

You have to excuse him. He bases his opinions on news footage of Haitian men beating Haitian women and taking their food sacks away from them. He also has heard first hand stories of lazy Haitians who flatly refuse to work and has read the police reports of machete wielding street thugs who rape and pillage on the streets as soon as witnesses are out of sight.

I am embarrassed to know there are Americans like you who have access to the public. I am ashamed that you would call yourself an American, you are a sad representitive. And with your ignorance, it is obvious you have not been there.

So Let them eat cake?

These people ARE doing the best they can for themselves. I'm sure if they hear there is more food in one direction they go there but walking takes time and during that time you need to eat so its not that simple. If you're talking before the earthquake that they should've moved to another country its not that simple, you need a lot of money and you need permission from the other country. Even if they wanted to move illegally, it’s across the sea, the only country they can walk into is the Dominican Republic which does better than Haiti but isn’t that great and even then they’d be illegal aliens in the Dominican Republic so that would limit their opportunities as they’d have to hide. I'm sure any of those people would've jumped at the chance to move to say, the US at least legally but in the meantime they have to provide for themselves and their families leaving hardly anything left to save in order to move.
Yes our ancestors lived without technology, and many died young of illnesses we can treat today because of more advanced medical technology or died of food poisoning or got sick from germs in the water. Now we have technology to prevent that too. Its great how many of these people survive and hang in there whether they get any aid or not but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t help them.

What an ignorant thing to say. You are implying they have sex because they’re bored because they are poor. Even poor people have things to do besides “sex”. They have lots of kids because 1. Less knowledge of and access to contraception. 2. In countries like Haiti more kids don’t make it to adulthood so large families are necessary. 3. There are more subsistence farmers and need more farmhands for more harvest, even in the cities this might be playing out if Haiti still has child labor and then they’d only be sending their kids to work because of the slave wages they get paid and because the educational system is broken enough they expect their kids to have nothing else to look forward to anyways.

The entire world's population could fit on Florida. Overpopulation is a convenient excuse so people can thumb their noses in the air and tell the world's poor that its their fault and they should just stop having babies. The fact is we have plenty of resources to feed and house everyone but because of extreme inequalities in wealth many people still starve. During the Irish Potato Famine potatoes were EXPORTED from Ireland, it happened because of poverty not lack of potatoes.
This is still the cause. If you look at any famine over the past 50 years none happened in democracies. If a famine happens in a democracy the people in charge don’t get reelected. They know this so when there’s a drought or food shortage they buy food from other countries. If the people are just poor but there’s plenty of food they still go out of their way to make sure no famines happen because they’d still lose votes.

There are many things you can eat to keep you alive. They can go near the ocean and fish, and there are tons of plants that provide the things that your body needs. These people need to keep an open mind because if you only have a one-track mind, you probably won't survive. Unless you find what you need.

Your implied premise is that its possible for these people to survive even without aid. Your implied conclusion is that therefore we shouldn't be helping them.

Your conclusion does NOT follow from the premises. There is nothing wrong with making things easier and probably saving lives after an earthquake.

Besides that not everyone knows all the plants and everything that can be eaten. Do you? Do you know all that? We Americans probably know a lot less than Haitians about what can be eaten in the wild with our highly sedentary lifestyles. And what if there just isn't enough in an area? Should people fight over the plants and animals that can be eaten?

No. I do think that we should help. Don't get me wrong. It just upsets me how some people are saying that what we are doing is not good enough. I said there ARE plants that can provide you with what you need but I didn't say that ALL plants are edible, did I? People are going to have to learn how to survive. Reality isn't pretty. If all the food was gone from this planet and your only chance of survival was to eat the last, lets say... fruit, I'm pretty sure we'd end up killing each other. Its survival of the fitest.

Fitness is not just individual. Groups have fitness, too, more than an individual because of strength in numbers. In the wild if the strongest individual wolf got into a fight with a whole pack of wolves who do you think would win? Together as one humanity we are more fit than any individual person. If we want to survive as a species we need to help each other.

with our economy being what it is today, how can anyone accuse the US of not doing everything it can to help haiti.

how come no one ever critizes Kuwait, Luxembourg, Qatar, Singapore or the UAE of not doing enough? these are some of the richest countries in the entire world and i never hear of them donating anything when there's a natural disaster. how come no one accuses them of not doing anything?

why is it always assumed that the US is the only country with a moral obiligation to help other countries, especially when so many Americans are in desperate need of help. i'm so sick and tired of Americans being helped dead last by America.

Did you hear a news report about them NOT donating? I doubt that so for all you know they could've donated a lot but the media didn't find it newsworthy or you just didn't read the right news sources. What is it with people assuming that if they didn't hear about it it automatically must not have happened instead of taking the time to look it up?

Here's one article showing that at least kuwait donated.

Oops. I don't see how I got that mixed up.

http://www.kuwaittimes.net/read_news.php...

In this article it mentions Kuwait donating 1 million US dollars in relief to Haiti.

This is an example of a flawed thought process. People assume negatives in the absence of evidence instead of logically believing that they just don't know or trying to look up to find out.

People assume if what ever their favored sources of media (usually FOX, CNN, MSNBC) doesn't mention it it doesn't exist or didn't happen.

People there are many things happening the mainstream media doesn't talk about that can be verified. Broaden your worldview. Look up some news in places besides the American media establishment for once.
