A strange switch in a 'green' world

Full story: Baltimore Sun

Earlier this year, another clean, "green" source of energy similarly was debated at a public hearing, but in that case, an even vaster and more vocal majority rose to denounce it.

It's important to keep in mind that the nation's "worst" nuclear accident caused zero deaths.

We are well served by diversity of energy sources. Denmark and Germany have made some mistakes with wind power. We can learn from their mistakes. Wind is limited to regions where wind blows with adequate force and it is intermittant, so it can't produce baseload power for the grid. We should encourage off grid applications for wind as it represents the second best emmission free energy source. Only nuclear power and dirty coal can provide baseload to the grid at affordable cost. The fact that dirty coal has high external costs not included in cost projections leaves only nuclear power capable of clean and affordable for baseload energy. Unless we face this fact soon, the high cost of fossil fuel energy will have a devastating effect on our economy. Nuclear power is expensive to build but with an 80 year expected service with very low operation and maintenance costs it is the cheapest of all sources of electricity.

Although industrial wind is a relatively new energy source for the U.S., research shows that it destroys precious habitats, kills wildlife, and is not suited to be near human dwellings. The main argument against wind in the East, is that it is very ineffective. It is a panacea for green energy. Nuclear, with its risks, is still the only dependable source for our energy-hungry lifestyles. We must be pragmatic: nuclear can be the answer to our energy dilemma; wind will only exacerbate our quest for effective energy sources.

I think John is on the board of Constellation energy and Transit Rider has his head in his seat while he's seated. Nuclear energy is SO clean HUH?? What about the spent rods?? What do you do with those that stay fatal to all life for IONS? Oh Just bury them in Utah with the rest of them? Wind and Solar are the only ways to go. If birds are dumb enough to fly into a blade that is turning at less than 5RPM and is as long as jet then they destined for extinction anyway. If people complain about the noise they make, then they obviously have never been anywhere that is populated because road traffic is louder than a wind farm. As far a mistakes made by others, there are far more successes. Look at the giant wind farm under construction in the Baltic sea. Look at the horizontal turbines that are already powering entire buildings and city blocks! This article is yet another reason I CAN'T WAIT to get the hell out of Maryland. This is the most corrupt local and state government in the US territories. And we just made #4 in the nation for highest tax burden...GREAT JOB O'Malley Voters THANKS!!

Straight in with the personal attacks: "X is a shill, Y is an idiot." You might as well confess your lack of good arguments straight away.

Well, we already have spent fuel to deal with, and burial is not a bad suggestion provided a little care is taken. To date it's completely safe just stored at the power stations. As for fatality, the spent fuel probably poses a significant hazard for a thousand years at most. Even the ancient Egyptians could build stuff that outlasted that. After that it's not going to be a lot more radioactive than naturally occuring rocks elsewhere.

Bear in mind that anti-nuclear organizations do everything they can to block resolution of spent fuel disposal, because they need it to be a continuing problem.

Radioactivity is unusual, but it's not magical and it's not infectious. Put radioactive material under a few hundred meters of rock and it won't suddenly pop up en masse somewhere else.

The same thing that you do with all of the other lethal waste; waste that has no half-life.

Saw a few videos of burning wind turbines on the youtube Pretty black fumes, and I'd wager pretty rich in carcinogens. Some clean energy!

And this at 10 times the cost of nuclear power? Who is paying for this scam?

Yes, and keeping in mind that the NRC and the rest of the world made design changes to reactors after Three Mile and Chernobyl to address these problems. The new generation IV reactors could use spent fuel rods that have been remilled to reduce the waste stream, this is one way to reduce the amount and half life of remaining waste while producing power on a very small footprint as compared to wind or solar. Perhaps a larger problem with wind is the cost of copper. There are copper cowboys out there that steal the copper in the wind mills. If you have thousands of wind mills over hundreds or thousands of miles, how do you secure them from theft? What does this do to the cost of power produced by these units?

More Americans have died in Ted Kennedy's car than in nuclear accidents in the USA. We would have to have forests of windmills to sustain the energy needs of our population (and then what happens on calm days!).

Then the Kennedys can talk and all the hot air will make the windmills spin!

When Ted Kennedy can look out from his front porch and see windmills in Martha's Vineyard, then I'll believe that they are good for the rest of us. In the meantime, build about 50 more nuclear power plants. They'll be needed to power all those "plug-in hybrids".

Why is it humor when you say it, and not humor when paraphrased? I actually did appreciated your attempt at humor, I meant my response to be an attempt at showing appreciation of your creativity. I would not dignify a post without either data or humor with a response.
