M.I.A. flips bird during Super Bowl halftime show

Full story: WHDH

For all the pomp and excess of Madonna's Super Bowl halftime show, it is likely to be a single extended middle finger by guest singer M.I.A. that is most remembered.

Entertainment media DESPERATE to stir up a "wardrobe-malfucntion "-style incident in Madonna's halftime show naturally play up something which most of us never saw.

And which the more mature among us couldn't care less about.

But if you did it, M.I.A.?

Good for you...;)

Why can't black women get on stage to perform without showing a boob, or their crotch, or flipping people off, or swearing? Is it because they have very little talent, and have to create a scene to get attention?

No, I'm afraid that's just your racist misperception.

No, I think it's because they have so little talent and self respect, they have to do something to get attention.

Not that I care terribly much but, yeah, it's inapropriate to do that on a stage where gazillions of children are garunteed to be watching. It IS, in fact, poor manners.

Never mind that all of those li'l chillun are flipping each other off at home and at school, huh? But that old "it's for the CHILLUNS!" argument never did make much sense.

"Inappropriate" has become a word for our times, and a pretty cowardly word it is.

"li'l chillun"? I am unfamiliar with this word, is it English? Oh, you mean "children"! I digress, yes, it's about the children and any attitude toward the opinion that having certain standards of what to expose them to "not making much sense" would surely lead to neighborhoods full of violent and morally bankrupt youth. You wouldn't happen to know of any, would you? As far a "inappropriate" being a "word for our times", nope, it's been around for a very long time, actually derived from Latin in the 1500's. Anyway, don't worry, someday if you apply yourself, you will obtain a mastery of the English language as well. I am still trying to figure out how the use of the word "inappropriate" is cowardly. Please explain.

I was joking in regard to 'li'l chilluns,' of course, but the point should have been obvious - the young are very much aware of what the middle finger means, and use it all the time themselves. Not to mention the fact that it was a quick flash by a side performer which many of us didn't even see at the time, but about which a great fuss is being created by the 'entertainment media.'

'Inappropriate' is an all-purpose word for modern-day scolds and bluenoses who feel the need to point their noses in the air and say something bad about things of which they disapprove. What they usually say nowadays is "that's inappropriate." I generally find it humorously phony and stodgy, a bit of political correctness the right and left seem to share. Obviously it was this USAGE I was referring to, not the word itself, which I'm well aware is much older.

Thanks for playing, though.:)

Using suppression of free speech to pay down the debt? Somehow I doubt the Founders would have approved.

You're quite welcome and while correct in that most children know what flipping the bird means, and do it to each other and what not, does one condone it, or condemn it? I believe one's answer to that determines how I might judge that person, to whatever small degree it may be. It's much like when I saw Wu Tang Clan performing "Dangerous" (or whatever the title is to that particular song) to a bunch of 6 to 10 year olds on Nickelodeon years and years ago. It was INAPPROPRIATE!=-) I believe that the time and place for kids to start being exposed to "inappropriate" behavior starts just a little bit in Jr. High, building up through High School, then reaching an apex in college. It's how I did it, and it is the correct way!
