James Whitmore had that rare gift of subsuming himself into his roles, so that when you saw him work (despite his distinctive appearance and style) you quickly forgot you were watching an actor reading lines from a script, and believed you had just stumbled upon some guy living out his life. He was utterly, completely believable in every role I saw him play. That is a difficult feat to pull off, and he did it with effortless grace.
His one-man performance, "Give 'Em Hell, Harry" is well worth the effort to track down.(I never saw "Bully!" or "Will Rogers Tonight," but I have no doubt they are equally superb.
The entertainment industry has suffered a genuine loss.
