Cleaning Casablanca: Morocco tries to erase slums

Full story: The Associated Press

This seaside city is known as a rich stockpile of art deco architecture, the hub of Morocco's economic growth and the setting of an all-time classic movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. But Casablanca is also the capital of a bleaker aspect of modern Morocco _ sprawling slums, where huge families are packed into shanties with tin roofs rusted by the ocean winds, and goats and donkeys munch stray garbage. 'It's as if we're eating straight from the gutter,' said Mina Abujaman, 48, describing the squalor.

What is even more heartbreaking, is when you SEE these slums first hand. I was in Morocco a year ago, and we drove by Sidi Moumen. It is more....deplorable than you can imagine. The roofs are so low, I'm sure many men cannot stand up straight inside the "house".

And "deplorable" is just the best word I can find to describe it that others may understand. There truly are no words for what you see, and to imagine having to live like that would horrify most if not all Westerners.

We should never point fingers and blame others for being angry, acting as if they should be GRATEFUL, until we are forced to see what they endure each and every day of their lives.

Forced? What kind of silly Stalinist mind set do you have? Much of the world lives in conditions similar to Morocco, and some places in the US are little better. Certainly it is valuable for Americans to know how other live, but you think they should be forced? What nonsense. How would you like me or anyone else to force you to do anything, chump? I bet you might not take it to well.

It is true what he says. They really are forced into these conditions. I saw it with my own eyes just a few weeks ago. It's either that or get yourself out and sell your body or mug and take off with all your money in your pocket. The economy is bad and there is no place affordable for these people.Sad panda!

Evidently you completely missed the context of what I was responding to. "Gimmie A Break" posted "We should never point fingers and blame others for being angry, acting as if they should be GRATEFUL, until we are forced to see what they endure each and every day of their lives."

Hmmm, maybe you and "Gimmie A Break" should be forced to live in such conditions until you get a clue. My finger is pointing at you both.

Nobody is forcing to live like animals, they have always done so and don't know any better.

my uncle died in Casablanca by some guys this passed week. And for what? they say his wife was being robbed and a bunch of guys jumped him. He fought a big fight until one coward son of moth..fu.. scum took a knife and stabbed him in the back!! One knife that killed him instantly!! What kind of animals are there in Morocco? He left his home in the USA to meet his wifes family and they sent him back in a coffin!! His blood will be avenged if it's the last thing I do. God rest your soul uncle

I guess this whole discussion was just a joke. People just want a chance to talk crap instead of the truth. My uncle should be a lesson that no matter where you are in the world you don't know when your day will come. Those that did this to my uncle will have their day if not on this earth but after. I apologize that I ever commented on this site I guess it was a way for me to let what I had inside.
