I have lived in Nicaragua for 6 years. My wife is Nicaraguan. The past municipal elections could only be described as massive fraud. The past 2 years, since Ortega has returned to power, he has made it clear his goal is to turn this poor country into a Cuban-style police state. We have already made our plans, as have many foreigners living here.

Hi Howard, I agree with you on the election fraud. I know that things really look rough but I am still hoping that it will not come to us having to leave Nicaragua. We have a lot invested here thriugh our Mission and personally as well. I really feel for the children here and with so many pulling out it is just going to get worst.

Decent, to-the-point article. However, many ex-Guardsmen fled the country. Most of the Contras were ex-Sandinistas and other folks who'd fought alongside FSLN brothers in the insurrection that overthrew the Somoza dictatorship. Disgruntlement with excesses led them to group in an effort to get the Revolution back on track. Also, credit for the ouster is too often singlehandedly applied to Ortega, whose bio is slim in those years and in fact is believed to have been in Havana prior to and up to the Triumph. There was close to some 90% Nicas in favor of the popular revolution, as they are called, and a good percentage of that who actually participated. So it is a shame these ironies keep getting repeated.
