I think the author of this article may be too used to the clear cookie cutter offering of movies out there today. When was the last time you read a book. It seems that your imagination is quite a bit rusty and you cant ever let it go. How ever you would like to interpret this movie is up to you. The director clearly made it that way. You ever piece together that the guy in space and tommy are the same person. The guy in space might be reflecting on his dead wife and the events around her death. The scenes in medevil times were clearly the book she wrote being acted out. Use your imagination. You think that since they were able to prevent aging in the monkey, he was able to do it himself and the bald hugh jackman was actually the future. To insult a director without fully understanding what he may be talking about is ignorance. I bet you are one to think ignorance is stupid but yet are ignorant yourself.

There are plenty of incredible works that take a decent ammount of thought to interpret. This is one of them. Don't simply judge a movie as bad because you Don't understand it the first time you watch it. No one else did either. However, there are people who have put the pieces together and now understand what the movie was meant to stand for. You might consider trying this yourself.

Ok thought about it, the only thing that was real was the present, before and future where just her story the foutain, which was all fiction. The bottom line is it was a story about two people living in modern time she was sick, he was a doctor trying to fix her, he didn't care about cureing the monkey cause it wouldn't help his wife but then it did cure the tumer he became excited but it was to late, she died he planted that little root thing just because I don't know she want'ed it but it doesn't make any difference, she said she wasn't afraid to die that death was the road to awe or a higher enlightned state of existence which is what the moral of the story is and the tree was just symbolism of his wife all that part was fiction her fountain story. she died he can't do anything about it except to cope with it by telling himself there is a after life and a heaven and there they will live forever.

The review was dead on. After watching this movie, I felt like Tommy was crazy all along. The blending of the three stories was terrible.

This is quite possibly the most beautiful and positively stunning film made in the last 20 years. Unfortunately for the reviewer it did not have any car chases, fart jokes, or a linear plot line, which is what makes this film so compelling.

"There's something wrong with a movie when the audience has no idea what happened after the last scene, and as the credits roll."

SHOULD READ

"There's something wrong with me when I have no idea what happened after the last scene, and as the credits roll. Furthermore, I am a film reviewing hack and should go back to writing the police blotter section for the Olathe News."

Go see this film.

I think that this is a very simple story of a research scientist who is having a difficult time coping with his wife's condition and the guilt of not being able to help her. I believe the real heroine of the story is the wife who wrote the book "The Fountain" to help Tommy cope with her inevitable passing. Where the story of the conquistador becomes metaphysical is his catharsis.

Tommy suffered additional guilt by not taking that last walk under the first snow and for leaving his wife's side during her last days. A theme which is prevalent within the later chapters written by him. Perhaps that proverbial reminder that life is short and time together precious.

I agree with adam in saying that this film was incredibly beautiful and an important film from the last 20 years. Visually, this film was absolutely amazing. I cannot say that I fully understand the message or idea that Aronofsky was attempting to convey, but I dont need to in order to respect and enjoy this film. I look forward to seeing it again and eventually unravelling everything there is to know about this film.

The movie was outstanding. The story was complex, that is why most people don't understand it. This movie is not for the simple minded. The truth is most people in the world these days adore the generic pop culture ending. I saw a preview for this movie in the summer and ever since then I couldnt wait to see it. I saw it when it hit theaters and needless to say it was nothing short of amazing.

hi everybody. the movie was simply wonderful. and as far as i could put the pieces together here it goes.
the movie is all about the doc and his wife. the spain story was just a story told by his wife but the end uncompleted. now that space bubble was nothing but doc's conscience, dream or arrogance or u name it who was not in the position to accept the truth of death. but as her wife convince him slowly he give up and accepts the truth and his arrogant self dies and so he complete the spain story like that because till then he knew that "noone can live forever. the life keeps transforming itself."

Well , i just finished watching the movie , and to be honest it didnt stir my imagination all that much . I like the explanation given by Jitesh , but apart from that the movie lacked common sense , who gives a fuck if his stupid wife is dying ?

Well the movies plot develops around his wife death so I'd say its a very important part. If you didn't understand the movie, Jitaditya Kumar, please don't trash it.
To me the movie was amazing, it really does trigger your imagination and raises questions in a religious and psychological way. I give this movie a 5/5.

Well I think the movie was about his death, he was given a chance to go back and make it right, he was too caught up in saving her that he never got to spend time with her. The things he changed where rather than pursing the cure, he went for that walk and never found that breakthrough. He also created an ending for the story, buy placing the seed from the tree on her grave, he planted a seed inside himself in Eden.

Hello, I just watched the movie, and I thought it was wonderful! I think the entire meaning behind the movie was Spirtuality. It talked about the tree of life and Adam and Eve, I think it was a take on life after death according to biblical referance. It may not have been your usual explenation of the after life, however I think it was a thought provoking take on an old idea. The doc and wife situation is showing that it doesn't matter what you do in life, you aren't God and all is in his timing. Don't waist away all your time with those you love trying to fix the unfixable, but spend time with them, and love them, you don't know how much time is left.
This movie left a lot to the imagination, and I think depending on the person could be interpreted many different ways, that way it would speak on different levels to different people.
For those who didn't enjoy the movie or think it wasn't amazing, I say watch it again with an open mind.

The movie isn't about the characters, it is about life, death and reencarnation... It's about budhism and finding the way to be complete, meaning, having a soul mate... That's why at the end, he returns to the Earth (the nebulous dies and gives birth to new stars, life from death) because he needs his soul mate...
This is my point of view
Btw, how short-minded was the author of the comment... hopefully Happy feet won't be as hard to get as The Fountain was...

This might not be the meaning that the writer meant to convey, but it's what I've got from the movie and the more i contemplate the movie, the better I think it is.

The first meaning I got was to spend time with those you love before it's too late because you'll regret it the rest of your life if you don't.

But I think the story's about how he failed in the past, the future is when they're together again and he keeps reliving 2002 till he gets it right n she lives. The story he writes changes what happens in their lives and she doesnt die.
