"It's an Aldi and it's in a rough neighborhood."

Sorry, Glenn, that's a good enough explanation for me.

You'd do much better with Richard Crowe's "Gaslight magic & Mayhem" tour at www.ghosttours.com . He may not have the official rights to the book, but he doesn't skimp on the blood 'n' thunder. Plus, you get a good meal.

We took a tour by Richard Crowe based on the Devil in the White City book and it was great. He was not afraid to take us to that not so good part of town and see the site where the Holmes building stood. It is now a Post Office, not an Aldi. There was a supernatural feel to the whole thing. Give it a try if you want to be entertained and informed.

I took the 'secret city' tour offered by the Discovery Center - Total Crap - and so was a painting class I took there

I agree with this review. I took the tour last spring and was very disappointed. I felt the time spent at the 'unrelated to the book but very related to the CAF' Glessner house was self-indulgent. The docent asked locals at the end of the tour if they could recommend any other Devil-related sites in Chicago. I suggested Graceland Cemetery, where several of the book's characters are buried, and the docent said she didn't see the connection. Overall a very disappointing tour, especially in light of how great their river tour is.

First off, there is much better in town than Richard Crowe. But more importantly, The Art Institute was not a part of the Fair. It didn't even open until a month after the Fair closed. So that is not an accurate fact. If the tour is stating that it is, then that tells me something about the quality of the tour. Too bad.

Actually Rob, main building of the Art Institute was built as the World's Congress Auxillary Building which was for the fair although not located on the grounds of the fair, so that is a technically correct. It was later coverted to the modern location of the Art Institute.

Rob,
The Art Institute Building opened as the World Congress Auxiliary Building and used for administrative purposes for the Fair. After the Fair closed, the Art Institute moved in.

This is an architecture tour not a murder tour. While the Holmes part of the book was terrific and played very well off of the parts about Burnham and the other fair officials, it had nothing to do with architecture.

Marshal Field Jr.??? Frederick Law Olmstead??? Either you're not from here or you have a lousy fact-checker. It shouldn't have been THAT hard to check the spelling on the big bronze plaques on the corner of Washington & State Street; or pull the spellings from any book on the World's Columbian Exposition. And did you forget the site at La Rabida Hospital? How do you think it got its name? Shame on you for such shoddy journalism!!

I couldn't put the book down. Could the weather have had something to do with the exposition. Recommend THUNDERSTRUCK which overlaps the timeframe and radio discovery in an intriguing mystery

I went on a tour that started at the Botanic Gardens. It went past the location of Holmes' house in Wilmette and then headed down to the south side. It was a great tour with a great historian. Yeah many of the buildings are missing but you got a great idea of distance between the exposition and the pharmacy. We also had a great lunch at the South Shore Community Center. Not sure it is still offered but it was TOP CLASS.

Do you happen to remember what the tour was called? Sounds very interesting and worth looking into.

Can't wait to check out MSI's virtual white city this weekend.
If anybody read the book they would know the "murder castle" was in Englewood. Do you think they're going to take a tour bus of people out there? Nah.
Yeah, tours of invisible buildings would be boring. What more could the guides do than reiterate what's already included in the book? I don't get it.
