Ok, seriously, why would Fred be listed when she was sort of another version of Willow? Why not someone like Cordelia who ended up developing quite a lot more than any of the other characters in all of his other programmes? I've nothing against Fred but really don't see that she was ever nearly as strong as someone like Faith, Willow, Buffy or Cordelia.

What, no Zoe? One of the most badass women EVAR.
And as interesting a character as Echo is, I'd have to replace her with Faith. A serious antihero, portrayed as the villain in season 3 of Buffy, she had to earn her redemption (and admit that she wanted to) when even the good guys just wanted her dead. Facing yourself, your past, and everyone else all at once? I can't think of any challenge more seemingly insurmountable. And yet she... surmounted... I guess.

Fred is my favorite! She was smart, and she had an inner strength which we saw often come out to the surface during season 4.

This is Whedon's own personal list of his favorite female characters. So, apparently he likes Fred more than Cordy (ick, never liked her, imo) and Willow. Strength can be more than just physical. And like Gunn said, she had a killer left hook. ;)

yea. kind of an odd poss...
Faith, Willow, and Cordy were probably better characters than Fred. Darla and Druscilla were better characters than Fred. As great as Amy was in that role, she really only caught fire when she became Illyria. I think Zoey was strong, but a bit one dimensional.
And someone should take Wesley out of the header of the last page. I know he's in the photo, but given his character's less than masculine nature, it's really bad placement.

Ahh. Thanks Nat. It's Whedon's personal choices. Well, OK then.
Still not crazy about the article format...

The casting had alot to do with it. What would of happened if Gellar got the part of cordelia & Carpenter ended up as Buffy?

The show would have been just as bad as neither have the acting chops to carry a show. Actually, what is striking about Joss Whedon's casting is how he invariably cast actresses who can't act for his leads: Sarah Michelle Gellar, Summer Glau and Charisma Carpenter all have a lack of acting skill in common.
